Even though you can't treat asthma symptoms when you're relapsing, the following ingredients can help control your asthma and make it less frequent to relapse. But don't forget, also consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

1. Lemon

People with asthma often have low vitamin C levels. Lemon is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants which can reduce asthma symptoms.

Squeeze half a lemon in a glass of water and add sugar to your taste. Drink regularly to reduce asthma attacks. Oranges, papaya, blueberries and strawberries are also rich in nutrients that help minimize asthma symptoms.

Note: Avoid bottled lemon juice. Do not eat citrus fruits during an asthma attack if symptoms worsen.

2. Mustard oil

When experiencing an asthma attack, massaging with mustard oil can help relieve the respiratory tract and restore normal breathing.

  1. Heat mustard oil with a little camphor.
  2. Pour into a bowl and when it's warm, rub it gently on the chest and upper back, then massage.
  3. Do it several times a day until symptoms decrease.

3. Eucalyptus oil

Pure eucalyptus oil is an effective treatment for asthma symptoms from decongestants. Research indicates that this oil has eucalyptol which can shed mucus.

  • Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the paper tissue and place it near your head while sleeping so you can smell the aroma.
  • You can also add 2-3 drops of eucalyptus oil to a pan of boiling water and breathe the steam. Try deep breaths for faster results.

4. Carom seeds

Carom seeds, also known as Bishop’s weed or ajwain, can be used to treat mild asthma, because carom seeds act as bronchodialators by widening the bronchial tubes in the lungs.

  • Boil 1 teaspoon of carom seeds in water and breathe the steam, as needed. You can also drink it.
  • Alternatively, heat a handful of carom seeds wrapped in a cotton cloth in the microwave for a few seconds. When the heat is right, put it on your chest and neck until the heat disappears. Repeat every day until you are satisfied with the results.
  • Another option is to heat the paste of carom seeds and jaggery, then eat 1-2 teaspoons twice a day for several days or until your asthma improves. This treatment is not recommended for people with diabetes.

Additional tips

  • Try to identify triggers for asthma and avoid them. Avoid allergens, irritants and pollutants in the air, and respiratory infections.
  • Consume herbs and spices such as rosemary, sage, oregano, ginger and turmeric for cooking.
  • Eat at least 2 servings of fish such as salmon, cod, mackerel and herring in a week. You can also take omega-3 supplements after consulting a doctor.
  • Consume lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Nutrients such as magnesium, selenium beta-carotene, and vitamins C and E can improve lung function.
  • Avoid processed foods with additives and artificial preservatives. These chemicals can trigger an asthma attack.
  • Limit your intake of milk and milk products if you are allergic to milk protein or have lactose intolerance due to lack of lactase. People who are free from this problem can consume milk, because fat from milk tends to have a protective effect on asthma symptoms.
