What is abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, or 'tummy tuck', is a cosmetic surgery that flattens the stomach by removing extra fat and skin, and tightening the muscles in your stomach wall.

When do I need to have an abdominoplasty?

You might choose to undergo abdominal surgery if you have skin that accumulates around your navel area and a weak lower abdominal wall. Tummy tuck can also improve your body's self-confidence. To be more specific,

  • Tummy tuck action is suitable for men and women who are in good health
  • women who have had several pregnancies can do this procedure which can be useful to tighten the abdominal muscles and reduce excess skin
  • Tummy tuck is also an option for men or women who were fat and still have excess fat or loose skin around the abdomen.

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing abdominoplasty?

The act of tummy tuck is not for everyone. Your doctor may be more careful about tummy tuck surgery if you:

  • have a large enough weight loss plan or consider the next pregnancy
  • have a severe chronic condition, such as heart disease, diabetes or irritable bowel syndrome
  • smoke

It is important for you to know the warnings and precautions before carrying out this operation. If you have questions, consult your doctor for further information and instructions.

Process

What should I do before abdominoplasty?

The first step is to choose a surgeon and visit the doctor for a consultation.

Before doing the surgery, you need to prepare the conditions in your home. You can ask your surgeon to tell you what needs to be prepared.

You will also need someone to take you home after a tummy tuck surgery. If you live alone, you will need someone to stay with you at least for the first night. Make a plan for that.

What is the process of abdominoplasty?

This operation is carried out under general anesthesia and usually takes two to five hours.

There are two types of Abdominoplasty, including:

  • Full abdominoplasty, which removes excess skin and tightens the muscles in the entire abdominal area, including around the navel
  • Partial abdominoplasty, which removes excess skin under the navel and tightens the lower abdominal muscles only

In general, full abdominoplasty usually involves the following processes:

  1. the surgeon makes a horizontal incision, the incision curves near the pubic hair line from one side of the hip to the other.
  2. skin and fat tissue are removed from the underlying tissue
  3. the surgeon will sew and tighten the loose muscles or the separating abdominal muscles
  4. excess fat is removed
  5. excess skin will be cut
  6. adjustable belly button position
  7. kuka-s closed with stitches, adhesive, or clips.

What should I do after an abdominoplasty?

If you are undergoing partial or complete tummy tuck surgery, the operated area will be stitched and bandaged. It is important to follow all your surgeon's instructions on how to treat the bandages in the days after surgery.

You will have to severely limit your strenuous activity for at least six weeks.

You may take up to one month of leave after surgery to ensure proper recovery. Your doctor will tell you about what you need to do or not do.

If you have questions relating to the process of this test, consult your doctor for a better understanding.

Complications

What complications can occur?

All operations have several risks. A number of possible complications of abdominoplasty include:

  • the risk of anesthesia includes an allergic reaction, which may (rarely) be fatal
  • surgical risks such as bleeding or infection
  • blood clots that can cause fatal cardiovascular complications such as a heart attack, deep vein thrombosis or stroke
  • damaged lungs
  • liquid clots under the wound
  • tissue death along the wound or skin removed
  • sensory nerve damage, which can cause prolonged or permanent numbness
  • numbness in the thigh - this is usually temporary
  • prolonged swelling
  • asymmetry (inequality) of the skin or navel
  • navel doesn't work
  • invisible, inflamed or itchy scars
  • continued surgery to treat complications

This is not a complete list. Your health history and lifestyle can increase your risk of other complications. For example, patients with weight are more likely to suffer from chest infections. You need to talk to your surgeon for more information.

If you have questions about possible complications, please consult your doctor for more information.

Things to remember

Abdominoplasty or 'tummy tuck' is a type of surgery performed to tighten loose muscles, remove fat and excess loose skin from the abdomen. Many surgeons recommend Abdominoplasty should be considered only after the ideal body weight has been achieved through diet and exercise, so this operation is only to tighten the looseness.

Doing an abdominoplasty will not stop you from gaining excess weight in the future. It's better to talk to your surgeon about the risks and benefits of Abdominoplasty, and what results you can expect.
