Definition

What is acid phosphatase activity?

Phosphoric acid can be found in various body tissues, including the liver, red blood cells, bone marrow and platelets. However, this enzyme is most commonly found in the prostate gland in the form of isoenzymes (or prostate phosphoric acid).

In general, this enzyme will increase if you have prostate cancer that spreads from the prostate to other body parts, especially bones. The high number of enzymes shows the level of metastasis.

Phosphoric acid is also present in high concentrations in semen. Therefore, this test can also be done in the vagina for investigations into rape cases.

High amounts of acid are also present in white blood cells, especially in white blood mono cells (adult forms of macrophages) and lymph nodes that are useful for diagnosing lymphatic system disorders and hairy cell leukemia (HCL). Acid phosphatase is a hydrolytic enzyme in lysosomes. Therefore, an increase in the concentration of acid phosphatase can indicate certain diseases, such as Gaucher's disease and Niemann-Pick disease.

In men, half of the total amount of acid phosphatase is found in the prostate, while the rest is found in the liver, spleen, blood cells, and bone marrow. While in women, all phosphoric acid is only found in the liver, red blood cells, and platelets.

When do I have to undergo acid phosphatase activity?

This test is done for:

  • diagnose prostate cancer and prostate abnormalities
  • predict recurrence of prostate cancer after surgical removal of the prostate
  • evaluate the effectiveness of androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) tests conducted at the same time

At present, this test is usually no longer done because more accurate tests have been found such as the Prostate-specific Antigen (PSA) test.

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing acid phosphatase activity?

  • Alkaline phosphatase and phosphoric acid are two similar enzymes that are distinguished by pH levels. Certain diseases can cheat high phosphoric acid through increasing the amount of alkaline phosphatase
  • in men, the inaccuracy of phosphoric acid levels can occur after digital testing (eg cystoscopy) because the test stimulates the prostate
  • drugs that increase phosphate acid levels include alglucerase, androgen (in women) and clofibrate
  • drugs that reduce the level of enzymes include alcohol, fluoride, heparin, oxalate and phosphate

Pay attention to warnings and precautions before undergoing this test. If you have questions, please consult a doctor for further information and instructions.

Process

What should I do before undergoing acid phosphatase activity?

The doctor will explain the whole set of test procedures. Relax and relax. Some patients may panic before undergoing tests so that they need psychological support.

You do not need to fast before undergoing this test. During the test, you are advised to use short-sleeved clothing to facilitate the process of taking blood samples from your hands.

What is the process of acid phosphatase activity?

The medical personnel who are in charge of taking your blood will take the following steps:

  • wrap an elastic belt around your upper arm to stop the blood flow. This makes the blood vessels under the bond enlarge making it easier to inject needles into the vessels
  • clean the part to be injected with alcohol
  • inject a needle into a vein. More than one needle may be needed.
  • attach the tube to the syringe to fill it with blood
  • remove the ties from your arms when taking blood is enough
  • attach gauze or cotton to the injected part, after the injection is finished
  • put pressure on the part and then put on a bandage

It's possible the doctor took a second blood sample (or a standing blood sample). This sample is taken at an interval of 4 hours from the first test and during that time you are also required to stand and walk.

What should I do after undergoing acid phosphatase activity?

Some people may feel pain when a syringe is inserted into the skin. But for most people, the pain will gradually disappear when the needle is right in the vein. Generally, the level of pain experienced depends on the expertise of the nurse, the condition of the arteries, and a person's sensitivity to pain.

After going through the process of taking blood, wrap your hands in a bandage. Press the vein slowly to stop bleeding. After doing the test, you can do activities as usual.

If you have questions about the test process, please consult a doctor for further instructions.

Explanation of Test Results

What do the test results mean?

Normal

Test results may vary depending on the laboratory you choose. Usually, the normal range of each test will be written on the test paper. Discuss with your doctor or health professional for more information.

Normal range

  • adults / seniors: 0.13-0.63 units / L (Roy, Brower, Hayden 37 ° C) or 2.2-10.5 units / L (SI units)
  • children: 8.6-12.6 units / ml (30 ° C)
  • baby: 10.4-16.4 units / ml (30 ° C)

Abnormal

If your test results are in the abnormal range, chances are you suffer:

  • prostate cancer
  • benign hypertrophy of the prostate gland
  • prostatitis
  • myeloma
  • paget disease (bone disease)
  • hyperparathyroidism
  • bone metastasis
  • multi-bone tumor
  • sickle cells crisis
  • essential thrombocythemia (ET)
  • lysosome abnormalities (eg Gaucher disease)
  • Kidney illness
  • liver disease (eg cirrhosis)
  • rape

The normal range for this medical technique depends on the laboratory you choose. Please discuss with your doctor if there are questions about your test results.
