What is surgical removal of a scrotum cyst?

Cysts on the testicles (scrotum) are not at risk of cancer. Generally cysts do not show symptoms and do not require specific treatment or therapy, but in some cases, the cyst will need surgery to remove the abnormal tissue.

There are two types of benign cysts, namely:

  • hydrocele: a fluid clot that occurs in the protective membrane of the testes
  • epididymal cyst: fluid buildup in the epididymis, a structure like the letter C located above and around the testis and attached to the back of the testis

When do I need to undergo surgical removal of a scrotum cyst?

If the size of the lump is large, surgery will relieve discomfort and make you move more freely. Generally, a benign tunor does not require special treatment, but if according to the doctor surgery (repair or drainage of fluid) is the right treatment for you, he will see from:

  • the level of pain or discomfort that you complain about
  • at risk of infertility or not
  • cause infection or not

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing surgical removal of a scrotum cyst?

If you want to have children, it is recommended to leave the lump if the cyst is in the epididymis. Epididymis surgery can leave scars and reduce fertility.

The liquid can be drained using a needle, but it will return later. You may also be given an injection to prevent clots from recurring.

Understand all warnings and precautions before carrying out this test. If you have questions, consult your doctor for further information and instructions.

Process

What should I do before surgical removal of the scrotum cyst?

The doctor will provide specific instructions to prepare you for the procedure to remove the cyst, including whether you can eat certain foods several hours before surgery. Generally, you will be asked to fast eating 6 hours before entering the operating room. You will be allowed to drink fluids, such as coffee, until a few hours before the procedure.

Discuss with your doctor about medicines that you are currently taking, allergies, or other health conditions. Furthermore, you will be scheduled to consult with an anesthesiologist to consider which anesthesia is suitable for your condition. Follow all your doctor's directions regarding the time to fast before carrying out this procedure.

What is the surgical process for removing scrotum cysts?

This procedure is done after you have been totally sedated. Surgery will last around 25-50 minutes. The surgeon will make a small incision in your scrotum. In the case of a hydrocele cyst, the surgeon will drain the fluid out of the testis, then sew it back or lift the tissue. For epididymal cysts, the doctor will remove the cyst. The doctor may remove a part or the entire epididymis.

What should I do after surgical removal of the scrotum cyst?

After surgery, complications or bleeding of scrotum tissue rarely occur in reported cases. If complications occur, handling is fairly easy; possible problems will disappear with the recovery process.

Removal of cysts is not a recommendation for medical procedures to deal with this problem, unless the cyst shows symptoms that are very severe and have a major effect on your health and quality of life.

You are allowed to go home the same day after following this procedure. Usually, you will be able to return to the normal routine (work or school) after 2-4 weeks.

Regular exercise will help you restore your strength to carry out daily activities. Before you start, ask for advice from the team of doctors about sports that are right for you.

Some lumps can grow back to replace the previous one. If you have questions relating to the process of this test, consult your doctor for a better understanding.
