Definition

What is a pen?

Pen is a supporting tool such as plates, screws, rods and cables. This tool is made of stainless steel or titanium and is used in bone surgery such as:

● help the broken bone in its position during the recovery period

● unite the bones permanently (arthrodesis)

● change the shape of the bone (osteotomy)

After the bones are fully healed, the doctor will recommend surgical removal of the pen. However, the decision remains in the patient's hands.

What are the benefits of this operation?

The benefits of this operation are:

● reduce pain or discomfort caused by pen installation

● treat infections around the pen

● prevent pen from joining bone, especially for patients who are still growing

Are there alternatives to surgery?

Pain and discomfort from the pen can be relieved by taking painkillers, avoiding pressure on the pen, and keeping the area warm when the weather is cold. Infection around the pen can be handled temporarily by taking antibiotics. But in some cases, the infection cannot be cured without surgical removal of the pen.

Prevention & warning

What are the consequences if you don't have this operation?

Infection around the pen can damage bone and soft tissue. In some cases, the infection can make the patient sick. Discuss with your doctor if you decide not to undergo this examination procedure.

Process

What should I do before undergoing the appointment of a pen?

Make sure you tell the doctor about the medicines being consumed and follow the doctor's directions. Before this procedure begins, avoid consuming warfarin or clopidogrel. For diabetics, sugar levels must be controlled before the procedure. The doctor will give instructions when you can take medication. For patients who are undergoing blood pressure treatment using beta-blockers, it is permissible to continue taking the drug as usual. For smokers, avoid smoking a few weeks or more before the procedure is done.

What is the process of appointment of a pen?

The medical team will provide a form that the patient must fill in first. This form contains the patient's name and procedure to be followed. Various anesthetic techniques may be used in this procedure. The surgeon will lift the pen through the same incision when the pen was first inserted. Small screw or wire pen types are sometimes more difficult to find. Therefore, doctors will make larger incisions and use x-ray camera assistance. Pen with a larger size will also be difficult to find if the tool is covered in scar tissue or bone.

What should I do after undergoing the appointment of a pen?

After surgery, you are allowed to go home the same day or the next day. Patients usually need 6 months or more to fully recover. Sometimes, this surgery does not get rid of all the symptoms you feel. It is possible for you to undergo further treatment. This is done if the pain that is felt before the operation still appears.

Complications

What complications can occur?

Every operating procedure must have its own risks. The surgeon will explain all kinds of risks that may occur after surgery. Common complications that can occur after surgery are the effects of post-anesthesia, excessive bleeding, or blood clots in deep vein vessels (deep vein thrombosis or DVT). Special complications that may occur after this operation are:

● there are still pens left

● nerve damage

● bones become weak

● severe pain, stiffness and complex regional pain syndrome arise
