Definition

What is a bladder stress test and bonney test?

Bladder stress test is a test to stimulate unexpected urination (urinary incontinence) that can occur when you cough, sneeze, laugh or exercise.

Bonney test is done as part of a bladder stress test, after the doctor proves that urine is released when coughing. This test is similar to bladder stress test, but the bladder neck is lifted slowly with a finger or device that enters the vagina to put pressure on the bladder. This check is done to see if your incontinence is the result of the bladder neck being pushed too far due to pressure.

When do I have to undergo a bladder stress test and a bonney test?

Bladder stress tests and Bonney tests can be done as part of a physical examination when:

  • Your urine comes accidentally when sneezing, laughing, coughing, or exercising
  • medical history, physical examination, and urine analysis did not reveal the cause of incontinence

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing a bladder stress test and bonney test?

It is not uncommon for a woman to be able to hold continent when performing this test in a lying position, but the risk of urine discharge when standing can be triggered by the presence of gravity.

Both of these may occur in a woman (stress incontinence and incontinence at the same time). The success of stress incontinence treatment can sometimes also help incontinence.

Bonney test is difficult to become a benchmark. Because of this, the results are not reliable. It is important during the test to remove the tissue on both sides of the bladder neck and not just pressing the bladder neck itself. If a urine leak stops when a finger or device is inserted into the vagina, maybe the cause is the urethra that is pinched closes, and not because your bladder is right. If Bonney's test is done to find out if surgery is needed, the doctor who does the test must be very experienced to get reliable results. It might be embarrassing for some people to urinate while being observed.

Process

What should I do before undergoing a bladder stress test and bonney test?

To help reduce the possibility of developing an infection after the test, you should drink water, herbal tea and fruit tea, and juice, and stop drinking caffeine like tea and coffee for 48 hours - to reduce bladder irritation.

What is the process of bladder stress test and bonney test?

When you lie down, a thin flexible tube called a catheter is inserted into the bladder through the urethra. Maybe you will feel burning when the catheter is inserted. If your bladder is full, catheter use is not needed.

About 236.6 mL of fluid is inserted into the bladder through a catheter. When the catheter is removed, you are then asked to cough. The doctor sees what fluid is missing and records the time interval between stress (coughing) and lost fluid. A stress test can be repeated when you stand up.

If a discharge is not detected during a bladder stress test or Bonney test, the test may be repeated in the position you are standing. Absorbent pads can be used to collect urine when you go about your daily activities.

What should I do after undergoing a bladder stress test and bonney test?

You need to drink around 2.5 liters of fluid a day for 48 hours after the test. When you go to the toilet to urinate, make sure that your bladder is completely emptied. You can do this by waiting a few seconds after you have finished urinating and then try again.

Explanation of Test Results

What do the test results mean?

Stress incontinence is recommended if urine comes out when coughing. People who lose fluids during a stress test can be helped by surgery that raises the bladder neck.

Slightly delayed fluid loss (occurring a few seconds after coughing) indicates that abnormal bladder muscle contractions occur. This is a sign of emergency incontinence. This contraction can be treated with medication.
