Definition

What is a bunion surgery?

Bunion is a bone lump in the base of your big toe. The most common cause of bunion is footwear that is not wide enough to hold your toes in a normal position. Bunion is sometimes associated with arthritis of the joints at the base of your big toe.

What are the benefits of bunion surgery?

This operation is done to straighten your big toe, so you will feel comfortable when using shoes.

When do I need to have a bunion surgery?

Most bunions can be treated without surgery. But when non surgical treatment is not enough, surgery can reduce your pain, improve the deformity of the foot, and help you do normal activities. You might consider the following to do a bunion operation, if:

  • non-surgical treatment has not relieved your pain
  • You have difficulty walking or doing normal daily activities

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing a bunion surgery?

The purpose of this surgery is to correct the shape changes in the legs and heal the pain, not to beautify the shape of the legs. This operation is not cosmetic plastic surgery.

After undergoing a bunion surgery, you still should not wear shoes that are smaller or narrow-pointed shoes. In fact, you may have to be loyal to some types of shoes throughout life. Always follow the doctor's advice in choosing the right shoe size.

Remember that the main cause of bunion abnormalities is narrow shoes. If you use narrow shoes again, your bunion will reappear.

Is there an alternative to bunion surgery?

Putting a cushion on a bunion or giving the distance between the big toe and the other finger will be very helpful.

Use the right shoes with good quality. If you can't find it, ask for advice from the hospital's orthotic department.

Process

What should I do before a bunion surgery?

If you decide to undergo a bunion surgery, you may be asked to do a physical test by your doctor before the surgery to assess your health. If you have heart or lung disease or other chronic diseases, you need permission from your family before the surgery is done. Before surgery, you should tell your orthopedic surgeon about the medication you are taking. You will be notified of drugs that must and should not be taken before surgery. Blood tests, heart charts, chest x-rays, urine tests, and special foot X-rays, are usually done first by your orthopedic surgeon to help the operating procedure run smoothly.

How is the bunion operation?

Various anesthetic techniques can be done. Surgery usually takes 30 minutes to an hour. This operation will remove the bunion, release or tighten the ligaments, align the big toe, joints, and straighten the smaller toes.

What should I do after a bunion surgery?

You should spend most of the time in the first week with your feet raised so that there is no swelling. Regular exercise will help you return to normal activities immediately. Before you start exercising, ask the health team or doctor for advice. Maybe after six weeks or more before the swelling begins to decrease, you can wear normal shoes again.
