Medical Video: Personality changes after stroke

Depending on which part of the brain has a stroke, a person's behavior may change compared to before he had a stroke. For example, people who used to be very thorough and neat, after a stroke can be messy and careless.

Many people blame this behavior change on emotional or psychological problems, and in some cases this may be true. However, there are other things that can also be the cause:

  • There might be a problem with memory. People who after a stroke suddenly don't want to take a shower and don't want to change clothes may just not remember if they need to do it.
  • There might be a behavior problem. Patients may not be able to behave well in social situations. If he shows bad behavior, immediately discuss it and don't take it for granted.

If your family member has a problem like this:

  • Remember that scolding or forcing will only make things worse.
  • Tell the patient immediately if he is doing something wrong or behaving disrespectfully / badly.
  • Make sure you praise him if he manages to make progress in terms of behavior.
  • Discuss with your doctor whether maybe this condition should be helped with medication.

Difficulty dressing after a stroke

Stroke often affects the movement and function of one side of the body. So, wearing your own clothes can be a difficult thing for people who have had a stroke.

For convenience, try providing a tool for installing socks / stockings, rings or straps attached to the zipper handles, and hook buttons. Talk to the nurse or physical therapist about any tools that can help dress.

Some clothes that are easy to wear by people who have just had a stroke:

  • Shoes that are tightened with velcro
  • Pants and skirt with rubber waist
  • Shirt with fast buttons

To make it easier to dress:

  • Align the clothes according to what will be installed / used first
  • Sit while dressing
  • Insert weak arms / legs first before inserting strong arms / legs.

Opening clothes through the head (such as when removing a shirt) will be more difficult. To undress when you have a stroke, remove the strong arm / leg first before removing the weak arm / leg.
