Research from a number of experts in the United Kingdom found that children with type 1 diabetes were nearly five times more hospitalized than children who did not have type 1 diabetes. In this study, experts recorded data from nearly 1,600 unhealthy babies and children up to the age of 15, all of whom owned type 1 diabetes. The researchers found that these children were almost 5 times more frequently hospitalized than children who did not have the disease.
The researchers found the highest risk of hospitalization in children with type 1 diabetes was in children aged 5 years or younger. After that, the risk of hospitalization falls by 15% in every child aged 5 years and over when the child is diagnosed.
Children with type 1 diabetes who come from underprivileged families have the highest risk. Based on evidence, clinical services are needed to see how to support care for those at risk: very young children and children from disadvantaged families. Younger children seem to have less sugar reserves and may not be used to feeling low blood sugar in the body. They may also not be able to communicate with parents and others.
Type 1 diabetes is related to other diseases, such as diabetes ketoacidosis, heart disease, kidney disease, eye disease, and chronic foot problems. The symptoms of complications that rob people of type 1 diabetes are called diabetic ketoacidosis. These symptoms include nausea or pain in the abdominal area.
