Do you not have children after years of marriage? Are you barren or infertile? During this time you might think that infertility and infertility have the same meaning. However, it turns out this is different. What is the difference?

Is that barren?

Barren means you cannot have children. A man is said to be infertile if he cannot produce sperm, or a sperm that is produced is bad, so he cannot fertilize an egg from a woman. This is due to the permanent damage to the testicles to produce your sperm. Whereas, women are said to be barren when their ovaries cannot release eggs, so women cannot release eggs to be fertilized.

Even so, your sexual function still works normally. However, unfortunately you cannot have children. Yes, infertility cannot be overcome in any way, unlike infertility. However, many people thought he was infertile even though it was only infertile. This condition made him despair so that he was more difficult to have children.

Therefore, if you do not have children even though you have been married for several years, you should not rush to say that you are infertile. First check your condition by seeing a doctor. You need to know infertility does not only occur in women, but men can also experience infertility.

What causes someone to be barren?

Infertility can occur when sperm in a male or female egg cannot be produced, so fertilization cannot occur. One of the causes of infertility is due to cancer treatment or chemotherapy. In addition, infertility in women can also occur because of early menopause, in which the ovary has not released the eggs again before the age of 40 years. Genetic abnormalities can also cause infertility.

Chemotherapy in men can cause damage to the testes so they cannot produce sperm. Chemotherapy can reduce the number of male sperm production (oligospermia), not even at all (azoospermia). This condition can occur in a long or even permanent period of time.

Is that not fertile?

Many people think that infertility is infertile. However, the good news is, if you are infertile, you can still have children. With more effort, of course. Relax, infertility in men or women can still be treated, one of them with drugs or surgery. Or, you might also try artificial insemination or IVF as a way to have children.

Fertile sleep is when you have had sexual intercourse regularly without contraception for 1 year but have not been able to get pregnant or have children. You are said to be infertile if you have more difficulty making conception (sperm meets an egg) or reaches pregnancy. Also, when you are pregnant but you are unable to maintain your pregnancy until the baby is born, you can also be said to be infertile.

Infertility can occur due to a disruption in male sperm production, or a disturbance when the egg goes to the uterus. You need to know that there are four things that you must meet to achieve pregnancy. If you cannot fulfill one of the four things, you can say that you are infertile. The four things are:

  • The presence of sperm
  • The ovary must release the egg to the fallopian tube (the channel that connects the ovaries and uterus)
  • Fertilization (sperm meets the egg) must occur
  • Fertilized eggs, sperm must be successfully attached to the uterine wall (implantation)

Signs of an infertile woman can be seen from her menstrual period. Women who have irregular menstrual cycles or no menstruation are usually usually infertile. Meanwhile, men show signs of infertility with problems with hormones, such as changes in hair growth or sexual function.

What causes a person to be infertile?

Many factors can cause a person to be infertile. The causes of infertility in men and women also vary.

Causes of infertile women

  • Ovulation disorders (release of eggs). This can occur due to hormonal disorders, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), hyperprolactinemia, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
  • Abnormalities in the uterus or cervix, such as abnormalities with the opening of the cervix, the presence of polyps in the uterus, the presence of fibroids (benign tumors) in the uterus, or abnormalities in the form of the uterus.
  • Damage to the fallopian tube, because inflammation occurs in the fallopian tube (salpingitis).
  • Endometriosis, occurs when endometrial tissue grows outside the uterus. This affects the function of the ovaries, uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • Pelvic adhesions, can occur after pelvic infection, surgery on the appendix, stomach, or pelvis.
  • Cancer and treatment of cancer, radiation and chemotherapy in women can affect their fertility.
  • Certain conditions associated with delaying puberty or cessation of menstruation (amenorrhea), such as celiac disease, uncontrolled diabetes, and some autoimmune diseases (such as lupus).

The cause of infertile men

  • Abnormalities in sperm production or function can occur due to problems in the testes, genetic defects, health problems, or infections. Varicocele or enlargement of blood vessels in the testis can also affect sperm quality.
  • Problems with sperm release due to sexual problems, such as premature ejaculation, certain genetic diseases (such as cystic fibrosis), structural problems (for example, the presence of blockages in the testes), or damage to the reproductive organs.
  • Environmental factors, such as exposure to pesticides and other chemicals, radiation, smoking, alcohol, or certain drugs. Heat exposure from the environment can also increase body temperature, so that it can affect sperm production.
  • Cancer and cancer treatment, such as radiation or chemotherapy that can interfere with sperm production.
