1. Definition

What is the bite of a black widow spider?

Black widow is a black spider with long legs that has an hourglass-shaped mark on its red (or orange) side. Its length is around 2.5 cm, including its legs, and is easy to recognize.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Black widow bites can cause pain and swelling. Because the symptoms appear quickly, spiders are usually still within range. Muscle cramps also occur for 6 to 24 hours. They rarely cause death (except in small children or when victims are bitten by some spiders).

Black widow spider signs and symptoms include:

  • Pain. Generally starting within one hour after being bitten, pain can spread from the bite to the abdomen, back or chest.
  • Cramps Abdominal cramps can be very severe and sometimes misinterpreted with appendicitis.
  • Sweating Excessive sweating can occur around the affected area or may involve all parts of the body.

2. How to overcome them

What should I do?

Compress with ice cubes in the affected part for 20 minutes to reduce the spread of poisons. Then go to the nearest emergency treatment or according to your doctor's instructions. Antivenin is available for severe bites in young children, and other drugs can relieve muscle pain.

When do I have to see a doctor?

Contact your doctor immediately in all black widow spider bite cases.

3. Prevention

Here are some things that must be done to avoid being hit by black widow spiders.

  • Wear long sleeves shirts, hats, gloves, and boots when cleaning storage boxes or firewood stacks, also when cleaning warehouses, garages, basements, attics and other narrow areas.
  • Check and shake the glove so that whatever is inside can come out. Do the same thing before wearing shoes and clothes that you happen to have not worn for a long time.
  • Use insect repellent, on clothing and footwear.
  • Try insects and spiders not to enter the house by installing mosquito nets on windows and doors in your home, or by caulking / closing cracks or cracks where spiders can enter.
  • Dispose of old boxes, clothes, and other items not used from the storage area.
  • Store items that you want to keep away from the floor and walls.
  • Get rid of piles of stone or wood from the area around your house.
  • Avoid storing firewood near the walls of the house.
  • Suck spiders and spider webs with a vacuum cleaner and dispose of it in a closed bag outside to prevent them from getting back into the house.
