Of course you can, as long as the condition of both babies is normal and there are no other pregnancy disorders. It is not uncommon for mothers containing twins to deliver normally, although there were 6 out of 10 twins born by caesarean section.
The position of the womb baby is one of the determinants of the labor process that the mother will undergo. Normal labor can be performed if at least the first twin will be in the position of the head down and the placenta does not block the cervix
In addition, the environmental factors of residence and hospital policies also influence the advice of labor. Some hospitals will recommend caesarean section for mothers with twins in one placenta. Because, identical twins are at risk of experiencing complications during birth. Whatever decision will be made, the safety of the mother and baby will be closely monitored.
Discuss with your doctor and midwife about the medical conditions and labor you choose. Ask about hospital policies and the experience of doctors in dealing with twins through normal delivery. Make sure the hospital you choose follows NICE guidelines for the birth of twins.
The doctor or midwife will discuss follow-up if the mother has not yet given birth when:
- 36 weeks of womb age with identical twins
- Womb age 37-38 weeks with fraternal twins
The doctor or midwife may recommend labor by induction or caesarean section.
After 38 weeks, the placenta cannot function optimally as before. Therefore, delivery of twins should be done when or before the age of the womb enters 38 weeks to reduce the risk of the baby dying at birth.
Normal labor for twins certainly requires more intensive treatment than normal delivery for one baby. This can increase the likelihood of caesarean section for the safety of mother and child.
During labor, the doctor will monitor the baby (EFM) and recommend an epidural to relieve pain. After the mother gets a painkiller, the doctor will be easier and faster to help the baby's birth process.
Discuss with your doctor or midwife about painkillers when checking the womb. That way, you will have time to consider the best choices for you and the baby.
Remember! Even though you have planned a normal delivery, you can have an emergency caesarean section because:
- One or both babies become depressed
- Down breeds (prolapse)
- Labor runs slowly
- Normal labor is not successful
In some cases, one twin baby can be born normally, while another baby is removed by caesarean section. This case was recorded as a rare case which only occurred less than 5% of twin births.
Ask midwives about special prenatal classes for mothers who contain twins. In this class, you can meet many pregnant women who contain twins, or who already have twins.
