The dense activity of urban communities may have an impact on their health. How come? Time out due to traffic jams, heavy office hours, meetings here and there all day makes sports a rare thing that can be realized. In fact, exercise is very important to prevent the body from obesity, which can be the initial gate of an illness, such as type two diabetes.

As we know, type two diabetes is a disease caused by lifestyle. Unhealthy food and lack of physical activity make fat accumulation easier to occur so the body then becomes overweight which can lead to obesity. On the other hand, those of us who live and work in big cities everyday, there seems to be no time to exercise. Never mind exercising, getting a decent rest period is already something to be grateful for.

Congestion can be one of the causes. Almost every major city has a problem in the form of congestion. Travel time from home to work that can take one to two hours at a time, making people already tired so they no longer have time to think about setting aside time to be able to exercise.

Even though it's difficult, it's actually not impossible. With a strong intention and determination to be physically active, it can still be realized in the middle of the hunt. There is one type of easy, even very easy exercise that you can do together with work. So, you don't need to bother trying to find the right time. What is sports? On foot.

Walking, sports are easy and cheap

Walking is arguably an easy and inexpensive sport that can be done by anyone. For productive age residents who spend most of their time in the office, walking can be one of the most affordable ways to exercise or do physical activities in line with needs.

According to the Chairman of PB PERKENI, Prof. Dr. Dr. Ketut Suastika, SpPD-KEMD, the lifestyle of today's society, especially those working in big cities like, Jakarta, is not healthy. The habit of going to work with private vehicles makes them less mobile and contributes to the increase in diabetes rates.

"Now, most people usually ride motorbikes from home to work. After that, immediately sit at the desk. Where is his gesture? Unlike in Europe where people have enough understanding of the importance of physical activity. They used to walk from the station or bus stop to their work place, maybe around one kilometer. "It's not bad," he said when interviewed at the signing of the MoU on Cities Changing Diabetes between DKI Jakarta Provincial Government and Novo Nordisk in DKI Jakarta City Hall, on Friday, August 24, 2018.

Prevent diabetes by foot, exercise is easy and inexpensive

A bad lifestyle and lack of exercise are thought to be one of the main causes of type two diabetes. This of course can be prevented by applying a healthy lifestyle and diligent exercise. No need to have a complicated exercise plan, like going to a fitness center three times a week because it usually only gets burdensome so you end up being lazy.

You can start with your routine, like using public transportation while working. Using public transportation allows you to do physical activity more often than using a private vehicle. This is because you may have to combine it by walking from the station or the bus stop closest to your office, and vice versa.

Researchers show exercise such as walking every day to work can reduce the risk of developing type two diabetes by 40 percent, compared with those who bring private vehicles, taxis, or transportation on line.

Ideally, the recommended time for physical activity in a day is 30 minutes. If the distance from your house to your office is too far to be reached on foot, you can work around this by using public transportation to the station or stop with the most possible distance to walk.

Benefits of walking to work

Anthony Laverty, the initiator of research from the School of Public Health at Imperial College London, as reported by DailyMail said that walking is a good way to improve health conditions. Here are some of the benefits that you get when choosing to walk to work:

  1. Have twice exercise time (morning and evening / night). If you have even confusion before determining the right time to exercise, on foot you have two chances every day if you live it in the morning and after work
  2. Make you more relaxed. According to researchers at the University of East Anglia and the Center for Diet and Activity Research, those who turn to walk from driving feel less stress
  3. You can also reduce the risk of obesity if you often walk because of burning fat
  4. You can reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes. Walking can also prevent you from the risk of high blood pressure
  5. Walking allows you to know new things around you. The existence of new knowledge that enters your brain will bring a new atmosphere that will increase enthusiasm
  6. You avoid traffic jams. How often do you finally give up sitting quietly in a vehicle and choose to walk to get to your destination faster? Walking, in addition to certain conditions can deliver faster to the destination, can make you avoid congestion.

Tips for walking to the office

You walk to the office with the aim of maintaining health, so pay attention to the following points so that other health problems do not arise.

  • Predict your travel time. Don't walk to the office to make you late. This will make you stressful because you have to add pressure from your boss in the office
  • Use the right shoes and socks. Comfortable shoes will make you able to walk comfortably too so that the distance you are targeting can be reached. It will also protect your feet from unnecessary injuries. Especially if you already have diabetes. Always pay attention to the health of your feet to prevent you from the risk of amputation
  • Use comfortable clothes. If you want to walk a considerable distance (exceeding 20 minutes travel time) make sure you use comfortable and appropriate clothes to walk. You should also adjust to the weather on that day
  • You certainly have luggage that you usually bring to the office. Use a backpack to help maintain good posture so you can avoid back pain
  • After walking, make sure you drink a glass of water to help replace lost body fluids

Still quoting from what was revealed by Prof. Dr. Dr. Ketut Suastika, SpPD-KEMD that walking to and from the office is a good idea to keep your body active. You can also choose a ladder compared to an elevator or escalator as an alternative to doing easy and simple sports in the office. Another important thing that you should not forget is awareness of the importance of physical activity in maintaining health. When you have realized the importance of that, then you will try to keep doing it.
