Sildenafil works to block the enzyme PDE5 (phosphodiesterase type 5) which triggers the dilation of blood vessels, so that it can treat angina.However, researchers found that sildenafil has a relatively short half-life and has the potential to cause dangerous interactions if used in conjunction with nitrate drugs to reduce blood pressure.
During clinical trials, it was noted that the drug had little effect on angina, but the results obtained were unexpected. The male subjects reported experiencing erections as a side effect. Since then, Pfizer has decided to market sildenafil to treat erectile dysfunction after further research has shown benefits in this group. In 1998, the Viagra drug became the first FDA-approved oral drug for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
