What are the types of thyroid cancer?
Thyroid cancer is the growth of abnormal thyroid cells and develops into malignancy. In fact, 1 in 10 lumps in the thyroid are classified as malignant tumors or thyroid cancer.
Every thyroid cancer patient may have a different type of cancer. According to cancer experts in the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), this is based on how similar the cancer cells are to normal thyroid cells and the location of cancer cells in the thyroid gland.
Some types of thyroid cancer include:
1. Papillary type
This type of cancer is often experienced by women, even about 80 percent of the cases in fact are experienced by women.
This type of thyroid cancer generally grows slowly on follicular cells in one or both lobes of the thyroid gland. Judging from the resemblance of cell form, papillary type cancer cells tend to be very similar to normal thyroid cells. As a result, thyroid cancer is rather difficult to detect.

2. Follicular type or Hurthle
Follicular thyroid cancer or hurthle including the second most common type of thyroid cancer after papillary type, which is found in as many as 10 to 15 percent of cases. Follicular thyroid cancer is more prevalent in countries with less iodine intake.
Just like the papillary type, follicular thyroid cancer can be easily treated if detected as early as possible. But be careful, the spread of follicular thyroid cancer tends to be more aggressive and faster than papillary types, even this cancer can spread to the lungs or bones.
3. Medullary type
Compared to other types of thyroid cancer, there are only 3 percent of cases of thyroid cancer, including the medullary type.
Medular thyroid cancer occurs in C cells in the thyroid gland and grows faster when compared to papillary and follicular types. So aggressive, this type of thyroid cancer can spread faster to the lymph nodes and other body organs.
Medullary thyroid cancer has a characteristic characteristic, which is releasing calcitonin in the body. Therefore, the presence of these cancer cells can be detected as early as possible through blood tests by measuring the levels of calcitonin and antigenscarcinoembryonic(CEA).
4. Anaplastic type
This type of thyroid cancer is one of the most rare cases, which is only about one percent of cases. But make no mistake, anaplastic thyroid cancer is actually the most dangerous and most quickly spread compared to other types of thyroid cancer.
This is because the type of anaplastic thyroid cancer grows very fast and is difficult to control. This causes anaplastic cancer cells to spread to the neck and throughout the body so it needs to be addressed as early as possible.
