A study conducted by Dr. Yuka Hamada and his team at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan, reported that chewing gum while walking can improve physical and physiological functions, especially for middle-aged and elderly men.

The study, published in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science, conducted research on 46 men and women, aged between 21-69 years.

Participants are divided into two groups. The first group was given two strips of gum to chew while walking at normal speed for 15 minutes. While participants in the second group walked for 15 minutes without chewing gum, but were asked to swallow powder containing the same ingredients as gum.

This research was conducted by observing several factors, namely by measuring heart rate at rest, average heart rate during walking, distance traveled, and walking rhythm.

In addition, the researchers also calculated how much energy was spent during walking. This is calculated by comparing the average walking speed and weight of each participant.

Based on calculated data, the researchers found that the average heart rate for both sexes increased significantly when chewing gum while walking.

Men aged 40 years and over burn more calories when chewing gum while on foot. Unfortunately, women do not experience this benefit because there is no change in the number of calories burned while walking while chewing gum.

The study also found that chewing gum while walking also can increase walking distance and energy released in middle-aged and elderly men.

Even so, researchers have not found the cause of this change. However, the researchers suspect that this increase in heart rate is related to cardiac-locomotor synchronization (cardiac-locomotor synchronizationor CLS).

CLS is a mechanism that connects a person's heart rhythm and locomotor rhythm. The locomotor rhythm is a person's rhythm which is characterized by a movement to move places such as walking, running, and jumping. This mechanism is also more likely to occur in older people than in younger people.

The mechanism of CLS is believed to arise from an increase in maximum blood flow to the active muscle, reducing it afterloadheart (resistance / resistance of the heart muscle when the heart pumps blood throughout the body during contractions), and increased systolic volume that accompanies increased venous blood flow.
