Your heart usually beats in a regular rhythm and assesses the right for the work your body does at all times. Normal heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute in a state of rest. However, the heart rate may suddenly disappear or even increase suddenly. This heartbeat disorder is known as an ectopic heartbeat.

What is an ectopic heartbeat?

An ectopic heartbeat is a condition of heart rhythm abnormalities characterized by a loss of one beat or even an extra pulse. An ectopic heartbeat is also known as a premature heartbeat.

Ectopic heart rate occurs suddenly without a clear cause. Changes in the pulse can also be realized by the owner of the body or not. For example, one beat of a beat when you are stressed or feeling anxious.

This is quite common and usually does not have a serious health impact.

Based on its origin there are two types of ectopic heartbeats, namely:

  • Premature atrial contraction - an ectopic heart rate that occurs in the upper (atrial) heart.
  • Premature ventricular contraction - an ectopic heart rate that occurs in the lower ventricle of the heart.

Anyone can experience this condition at any age. At the age of children, the ectopic heart rate is usually from the upper chamber of the heart and is not dangerous. Whereas in adulthood, this condition occurs in the lower part of the chamber.

The appearance of an ectopic heartbeat generally becomes more frequent with age.

What caused it?

Some things can cause the appearance of an ectopic heartbeat, including:

  • Consume caffeine
  • Smoke
  • Take drugs such as cocaine, heroin, marijuana and amphetamines
  • Consumption of spicy and salty foods
  • Stressed out
  • Feeling anxious or nervous
  • Experience panic attacks
  • Hormonal changes
  • Side effects of alcohol consumption
  • Physical activity
  • Experiencing potassium levels
  • Side effects of consuming allergic drugs or colds, such as antihistamines.
  • Side effects of taking regular medications for asthma, such as inhalers; medicine for taking salbutamol, ipratropium bromide.
  • Side effects of consumption of hypertension drugs hydralazine and minoxidil
  • Other health problems.

Ectopic heart rate also found more individuals who:

  • Have a family history of ectopic heart rate
  • Have a history of a heart attack
  • Suffering from heart disease
  • Having an infection of the heart muscle
  • Having hypertension

Ectopic heartbeat is also a common thing for women who are pregnant, because their body and cardiovascular system experience changes in supply and needs. Both pregnant women and womb babies can experience this condition, but generally it is not harmful to the health of the pregnancy

Other health conditions related to ectopic heartbeat

In addition to feeling lost and increasing heart rate, this condition can also be accompanied by symptoms of heart health problems, such as:

  • Heart beat.
  • Heart rate feels tighter.
  • Heart feels stopped.
  • Feeling weak.
  • The head feels dizzy.

An ectopic heart rate generally does not cause complications in heart health. But this condition can be an early sign and heart problems can develop such as:

  • Ventricular tachycardia - which is characterized by a faster and irregular heartbeat
  • Arrhythmia - irregular heart rhythm disorders; can be too fast or too slow.

How can an ectopic heart rate be recognized?

This condition is likely to occur unnoticed because it does not have specific signs and distinctive effects. But if you often feel disorders such as loss of heart rate, you should consult your doctor.

A diagnosis of an ectopic heart rate is also aimed at finding other heart rhythm disorders. This is done by using several diagnostic methods such as a 24-hour heart rate monitor, rhythm examination and heart electrical signals with an electrocardiogram and other function checks with an echocardiogram, MRI or CT scan.

What is the handling like?

Usually doctors do not take specific actions to deal with ectopic heartbeat.

Even though there is an increase or decrease in pulses, but generally the heart is still working properly. Symptoms of an ectopic heartbeat can also disappear and improve on their own.

If the symptoms do not disappear, the doctor will examine them further to find out the cause behind the appearance of an ectopic heartbeat.

On the other hand, the appearance of an ectopic heartbeat can be prevented by avoiding the formation of common abnormal heartbeats such as stress, alcohol consumption and smoking, or other triggers such as excessive caffeine consumption.
