What causes boils?

Boils are skin infections that attack hair follicles or oil glands under the skin. At first, boils only look like a reddish rash that hurts to the touch. Over time this redness will develop to form a hard lump, fully filled with pus which can soften when touched. Lumps can sometimes be as big as ping-pong balls.

Boils often appear on the body or back, neck, armpits, buttocks, or groin. But you can experience boils on any part of your body, especially in areas with hairy skin that are prone to sweating or experiencing friction.

The cause of boils is the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria live on the skin, inside the nose, and throat. The skin is an important part of the human body's immune defense against foreign matter and disease-causing germs. Therefore, damaged skin, because it is scratched or punctured, can become a gate for bacteria to enter the body and infect the surrounding skin.

Some boils can also be caused by infections from ingrown hair. Infected skin disrupts the body's immune system so that the location of the wound becomes festering.

Who is prone to ulcers?

Everyone can get boils. But usually people with certain diseases or who are taking certain drugs that weaken the immune system will be more prone to boils. Diseases that weaken the immune system include diabetes or kidney failure.
