Medical Video: 10 Traits of a Psychopath

People say, yawning is contagious. You may have yawned a few seconds after the person before you yawned. What if this never happened to you? Then you can have psychopathic characteristics. In a recent study, it was found that someone who did not work with infectious yawning tended to have psychopathic and anti-social tendencies. How could this happen?

Resistant to not yawning when you see others yawning is one of the characteristics of a psychopath

When you are relaxing at home, watching television in the living room, then you yawn. Then your partner who sees you yawning accidentally yawns for a while. Yes, yawning is contagious, even discussed and proven in several studies. However, why yawning is contagious is indeed still a big mystery in science. Until now, experts have not been able to ascertain what causes yawning can be transmitted from one person to another.

However, a new study shows that people who have psychopathic characteristics are more immune and do not yawn despite seeing other people yawning in front of them. This research was published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences and took data from 135 students. In the study, researchers gave psychological tests to determine the nature and behavior of respondents. Then, the researchers also made observations related to the yawning activities carried out by 135 respondents.

Then, from the results of the study it was revealed that indeed students who have a low social empathy, emotions tend to be unstable, and impulsive (which is a characteristic of psychopaths) are less yawning compared to other friends. This rare yawn is also considered a sign that they are resistant and immune to not evaporate when others evaporate.

Why isn't yawning considered a psychopathic trait?

Indeed, this can not be used as a benchmark to find out whether someone really has psychopathic characteristics or not. But in this study, the researchers concluded that low empathy is the nature of someone who is considered responsible for infectious yawning. So, when someone is immune to the contagious yawning, this is associated with a low sense of empathy.

Meanwhile, psychopaths themselves are conditions in which a person has a low level of social empathy. Not only that, psychopaths are also characterized by an antisocial lifestyle, tend to be selfish, manipulative, impulsive, fearless, and dominant.

The relationship between low social empathy and resistance to infectious yawning has been demonstrated in several studies. As in a study conducted in a group of children with autism, shows that autistic children tend to be resistant and immune to infectious yawning. So, they rarely yawn despite seeing someone around them yawn. This can happen because children with autism usually do have a sense of empathy that is less than children of their age.

Then, am I a psychopath because I rarely yawn?

You or your friend does not yawn when they see someone else yawning, does not mean he is a psychopath. Maybe the person who yawns is a stranger so, he doesn't have strong social empathy towards that person.

Even so, indeed further research is needed regarding infectious yawning with a person's tendency to possess psychopathic characteristics. In addition, it has also been said that this cannot prove that a person is a psychopath. Need a further psychological examination to find out.
