Everyone seems to have a different opinion about this. Some people argue that sleeping on a bra can prevent sagging breasts, others say that a bra worn during sleep will block the work of lymph nodes - and can even cause breast cancer.

Not a few who say sleep using a bra can make the breasts tighter, but there are also those who argue that bra material can cause irritation to the breast.

According to Dr. Amber Guth, director of the Multidisciplinary Fellowship Breast Cancer Surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center, there is no medical certainty in terms of health benefits or risks from sleeping using a bra.

Sleeping with a bra can provide comfort, but not a guarantee that the breasts can stay tight. Women who have large breasts tend to sleep using bras, as well as pregnant women, because their breasts can grow to twice their size normally and are much heavier.

Is it true that sleeping with a bra is at risk for breast cancer?

The idea that wearing a bra for more than eight to 12 hours in one day will weaken the breast tissue so that the breast will sag faster is not right. Loosening or changes in breast shape are caused by a number of factors, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, the law of gravity, or signs of aging (reduced collagen production).

Deborah Axelrod, M.D., a breast surgeon and associate professor from NYU Langone Medical Center, said that a bra with a bra or wearing a bra during sleep will not increase your risk of breast cancer.

This rumor began around the 90s where a book writer claimed that wearing a tight bra every day (especially a bra with a bra) raises a higher risk of breast cancer. He claims that by limiting the work of the lymphatic system (which eliminates toxins from the body), bras can trap poisons to remain in the breast tissue and cause cancer. However, until now, there is no research or medical evidence that can support the claim.

So, can you sleep in a bra or not?

Guth said that, if you still want to wear a bra while sleeping, choose a bra that is not too tight to limit or stop blood circulation. There are a number of things you need to remember. First, avoid hard and stiff bra models. Bra wire can press against the chest when you lie face down and rub the skin, causing irritation or maybe a cyst. Choose the type of bra made from soft and soft, like a sports bra, but not too too stretchy or loose. A good sleep bra not only gives you support, but also doesn't suffocate you.

However, if your bra routine turns out to contribute to limpatic blockages, you should be more observant in looking at other signs and symptoms, such as edema (accumulation of fluid in the breast), changes in non-cancerous breasts, either shape or size in axillary lymph nodes. This gland is in the armpit area and serves as the body's first protection against all types of infections, foreign material, and cancer cells.

Experts and researchers are still trying to investigate all possibilities related to breast to molecular details, other factors that can predict or permissively develop breast cancer, but it is doubtful that external factors such as bras have a significant effect.

So far, there is no problem whether you choose to sleep with a bra or not. This is only limited to personal safety and comfort aspects to help you sleep better.
