Have you ever wondered, who will grow taller, brother or sister? These questions are often asked along with the facts in the field that find the second child and so on tend to be higher than the first child. Then, is there a scientific fact about this? Here's the review.

Research on the influence of birth order on height

Apparently, there is evidence to show that based on anthropometry or the science of measuring human body dimensions and body specific characteristics, firstborn children tend to grow taller than children born later. Birth order is considered to affect high growth factors that are associated with several factors, especially metabolism in childhood.

Research conducted by experts from the University of Auckland in New Zealand seeks to prove the answer scientifically. A total of 312 prepubertal children were the subjects of research to prove who was higher, the first child or even the second and after child. Of the 312 children studied, 157 children were firstborn and 155 children were children born later. Of 155 children, 119 children were the second child and 36 children were the third child. All are children aged 3-10 years with maternal gestational age at birth 37-41 weeks and birth weight according to gestational age.

Assessments included height, weight, body metabolism, hormonal profile, and body composition measured by Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) or through bone density measurements.

The first child tends to be taller

The results showed that the first child was higher than the child born afterwards. The eldest child also tends to grow higher when compared to the height of his parents. The researchers found that the eldest child was about 2.5 cm taller than the child born afterwards. Between the firstborn and the second and third children there are different decreases in mean height. From the eldest child to the second child generally decreased by 1.3 cm while from the second child to the third child the average fell about 2 cm.

So that the first child tends to be higher than the second child, and the second child is higher than the third child. The first child, still higher than the third child. It can be concluded that the eldest and second children have higher growth hormone compared to the third child. Research also states that these high differences tend to persist into adulthood, not just in childhood.

Furthermore, according to the higher stature, the first and second children had higher IGF-I compared to the third child. IGF-I is an important mediator of growth in childhood.

Not only about height, this study also examines the question of excess fat in the body in children according to the order of birth. The first and second children have more excess fat in the body (lowering android fat into gynoid fat) than the third child. However, other parameters such as blood fat levels are not affected by the order of birth.

In addition to height, the birth order may also affect children's emotions, attitudes, and personality development.

But back again, not all the first children in the world are taller than their siblings. This condition can also depend on body condition, nutritional intake, and genes in each child. In addition, this study did not consider the sex of the first child and younger siblings. Therefore, the results of this study are indeed not a definite formula for determining which children will grow taller.
