Medical Video: If you can't do this you CAN'T sing..

Singing is a universal culture that many people do in all parts of the world. For some people, they are very confident in singing because they have a good vocal voice.Meanwhile, for some other people sometimes singing is only to be enjoyed by themselves because they feel the sound is not good. Or worse, there are even some people who don't want to sing because they are afraid to hear their own voice because of the chaos. Why is there someone who has a good and bad voice when singing? Here's the explanation.

What happens to the body when you sing?

According to Sean Hutchins, quoted on the NBC news page, a researcher at the Université de Montréal International Laboratory of Brain, Music and Sound Research, singing is a complicated activity.

Singing is complicated because first people have to match the tone that they hear with the sound that will be issued correctly. Then someone who sings also has to control their vocal muscles so that the sound does not deviate from the tone they should (called fals).

Then why is there someone whose voice isn't good when singing?

Sean Hutchins suspects that there are two possibilities for someone less skilled at singing. First, because it cannot capture the tone correctly. Second, because it cannot control the vocal cords and vocal muscles properly.

In the 2012 journal American Psychological Associations, Hutchins tested two groups in his research, namely a group of musicians (who had been trained in music) and a group of non-musicians (never trained in music). First, respondents were asked to move a tool to assess their ability to capture the tone. If they hear a tone, they must match it to operate the tool.

According to Hutchins, the results of all respondents in both groups could hear the right tone. All respondents can match tones that are heard correctly.

Next, the two groups were asked to make their vocal voices, following the tone given on the computer. The result, when respondents were asked to use their own voice, in the group of non-musicians only 59% of those who managed to issue the right sound with the tone from the computer.

From these findings, Hutchins suspects that the root of the problem is that they do not have good control when moving the vocal muscles when making a sound. The brain also plays a role in making this vocal sound.

The brain is able to capture the tone correctly, but someone who is bad at singing cannot emit the same tone as what he hears. The brain is unable to connect the tone it hears with the appropriate muscle movements so that the sound is right with what is heard.

Can poor vocal conditions be corrected?

In the PennState News page, Professor Joanne Rutkowski from Pennsylvania State University said that, the actual sound quality depends on many factors. Everyone can certainly learn to sing well enough to sing songs with a basic level of difficulty, unless the person experiences certain physical disabilities.

Even though everyone who can speak can learn to practice vocal sounds, not everyone will have a voice that sounds amazingly beautiful. Musical talent and flying hours in the music world also affect a person's sound quality.

According to Rutkowski, many people cannot sing because they have the habit of singing using the sounds they normally use everyday to talk. People usually speak with a low and limited voice range.

As for singing, this sound is higher than the sound when speaking. Singing requires a relaxed vocal mechanism while processing your breath so that the sound produced is very beautiful in your ears. So it's not using sound when speaking as usual.

The longer people get used to singing with the sounds they use everyday to talk, the more difficult it is to change that habit. Therefore, younger age will be faster and easier to be trained in his vocals.

Children are also more flexible in coordinating muscles and brain with the tones they hear. For adults, more effort is needed to improve their vocal voice. However, vocal training can be done by everyone so that their voice does not deviate from the tone they should orfals.
