Medical Video: Abdominal Pain on Right Side
Abdominal pain on the right, what does it mean? Some of you may often feel abdominal pain on the right that is not known what causes it. When you feel this, you might think that the pain that feels certain will disappear and there are no problems in your body. But, wait a minute, don't draw conclusions too fast. It can be that the pain you feel in the right abdomen is a sign of a particular disease.
Abdominal pain is generally used to describe pain originating from organs in the abdominal cavity. The organs in the abdominal cavity are the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas. You can feel abdominal pain in mild intensity until severe acute pain and can be caused by various conditions.
What causes right stomach pain?
Abdominal pain can be caused by inflammation, for example due to appendicitis, diverticulitis, and colitis. Can also be caused by stretching or organ distension, such as intestinal obstruction, blockage of the bile duct by gallstones, or swelling of the liver with hepatitis. In addition, abdominal pain can also be felt because of absence of blood supply into the organ, as in ischemic colitis. However, for unclear reasons, abdominal pain can also occur not because of inflammation, distention, or the absence of a blood supply, such as irritable bowel syndrome (irritable bowel syndrome/ IBS).
You can feel abdominal pain in various parts of the abdomen, such as the middle, right, or left. Different location of pain, the cause is different. In abdominal pain located on the right, it is generally caused by acute appendicitis, gallstones or biliary colic, cholecystitis, or other diseases associated with the liver, intestines, kidneys or gallbladder.
1. Appendicitis
Appendicitis or appendicitis is the most common cause of lower right abdominal pain. The appendix is an organ extending from the large intestine. Appendicitis can occur when there is a blockage in the appendix due to infection, as a result the appendix is swollen and you feel pain in the right side of the abdomen.
The pain that is felt usually starts from the abdomen around the navel (umbilicus) to the lower right abdomen. Pain that is felt to be permanent and can worsen if you move or there is emphasis. Other symptoms that indicate appendicitis are loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Appendicitis is usually treated with appendicitis.
2. Biliary colic
Biliary colic is a medical term used to describe the right upper abdominal pain that appears suddenly. Biliary colic occurs when there is blockage in the bile duct by gallstones. Pain caused usually lasts for several minutes to an hour after you eat food, especially fatty foods.
Pain that is felt can appear suddenly and persist, then the pain can increase in intensity, like a wave. This pain arises from the right side of the abdomen to the right side and bottom right shoulder blades. In addition, you can also feel nausea and vomiting.
If you suffer from the above symptoms coupled with the presence of fever, feeling cold or shivering, yellowing around the white area of the eye, this might be caused by cholecystitis. Cholecystitis can be very serious if not treated immediately.
3. Kidney stones
If you have kidney stones, you may feel abdominal pain on the right side. Pain due to kidney stones is often similar to pain due to biliary colic. Pain appears suddenly and occurs on the right side of the abdomen or waist. Pain pain can spread to the groin. You can also experience cramps, nausea and vomiting.
Often this pain occurs in very severe intensity. So, usually individuals who feel this pain will try to find a comfortable position. Pain that is felt depends on the size of the stone in the kidney. Small kidney stones may not cause pain like this and can still get out of the body without special treatment. However, if the stone is large, more than 7 mm, a surgical procedure is needed to remove this stone so that your kidney does not deteriorate.
4. Constipation
Constipation or constipation is difficulty in defecating. Keep in mind that constipation is not only due to hard stools or difficult to get out, constipation can also be said if you rarely defecate. Normally, adults defecate 3 times or more per week.
Constipation sometimes causes pain in the right abdomen. If this condition worsens, you can also experience swelling of the stomach and sometimes vomiting. Constipation can be prevented or treated by drinking lots of water and eating fibrous foods.
5. Other diseases
Other diseases associated with right abdominal pain are mesenteric lymphadenitis (inflammation of the lymph nodes in the membranes that attach to the intestine or abdominal wall), ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies, colon cancer, hepatitis or other diseases related to the liver.
If you feel pain in the right side of the abdomen accompanied by other symptoms, you should immediately consult your doctor. The doctor will examine you further to find out the disease or problem you are suffering from.
