What are the characteristics of normal vaginal discharge?
Leucorrhoea or vaginal discharge is the discharge of body fluids from the vagina. Leucorrhoea does occur naturally in all women, according to the menstrual cycle. Usually the liquid that comes out is a thick and sticky liquid, but is more fluid and clear when ovulation occurs.
Normal vaginal discharge is generally white with a small amount and a sticky texture. Leucorrhoea serves to cleanse bacteria and germs in it. Fluid made by glands in the vagina and cervix will bring dead cells and bacteria out of the vagina. This makes the vagina clean and helps prevent infection.
What characteristics of abnormal vaginal discharge should you be aware of?
Most vaginal discharge is considered reasonable and safe when it occurs during stress, pregnancy, or sexual activity. However, it's a good idea to see a doctor if the vaginal discharge is accompanied by symptoms such as vaginal pain, the color is not white, and odorless. This condition is commonly known as pathological vaginal discharge.
The following are some of the characteristics and symptoms of abnormal vaginal discharge:
- Leucorrhoea is brown and bleeding, usually accompanied by pelvic pain and irregular menstrual schedules.
- Whitish fluid that comes out cloudy like gray or yellowish, can indicate the presence of sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea. This condition is often accompanied by pain in the pelvis and when you urinate.
- If your vaginal discharge comes out in large amounts and is accompanied by a swollen vagina, pain around the vulva, and itching, it can be caused by a vaginal yeast infection
- Whereas if you have white, gray, or yellow vaginal discharge with a fishy or sour aroma, it can be caused by bacterial vaginosis. Sometimes this condition is also accompanied by itching and redness in the vaginal area.
How do you deal with this abnormal vaginal discharge?
If you experience abnormal vaginal discharge, it's a good idea to ask and consult a doctor first. Later the doctor will detect your vaginal health history. Basically treated vaginal discharge depends on the root of the problem.
For example, fungal infections are usually treated with antifungal drugs that are applied to the vagina in the form of creams or gels. While vaginal discharge caused by bacteria vaginosis is treated with antibiotic pills or creams. Examples such as trichomoniasis bacteria are usually treated with drugs called metronidazole or tinidazole.
However, you can do medication and prevention at home to deal with abnormal vaginal discharge in the following ways:
- Use special female antiseptic fluids containing povidone-iodine during menstruation to clean the outside of the vagina, to prevent abnormal vaginal discharge afterwards.
- Use a condom if you have sex a week after the start of treatment, or wait a week before having sex. This prevents transmission of sexual diseases.
- Clean the vagina and don't forget to make sure the vagina and groin are dry, avoid moisture.
- Always wash from the front to the back to prevent bacteria from entering the vagina.
- Use underwear made of 100% cotton and avoid wearing pants that are too tight.
