Medical Video: Sleeping all day during fasting, is my fast valid?

A full month of fasting, holding back thirst and hunger for almost 13 hours is an obligation for Muslims. When fasting, you experience several changes such as diet, sleep time, and daily activities so that it can affect your biological clock and body metabolism.

Changes in sleep time make you more often feel sleepy and finally when there is no activity you prefer to sleep all day to get rid of drowsiness. However, does sleep during fasting really make you lost from sleepiness?

Is it good to sleep all day while fasting?

Fasting is often associated with changes in sleep patterns. Activities such as eating, drinking, gathering with relatives, and exercise are often done after breaking the fast until the evening. In addition, additional tarawih prayers also add to the activity after breaking the fast. Although not severe, these changes can affect sleep time during fasting.

Not infrequently when fasting people are more awake at night, and feel sleepy in the morning to do activities. So that makes some people spend their time off on the bed from morning to afternoon, even before the breaking time.

Actually, too little or too much sleep can make the body more tired. It makes sense if sleep deprivation makes you feel tired, but you might be confused knowing that sleeping more than you need might not make you fresh and excited. In fact, many people feel lethargic and not excited because they sleep all day while fasting.

A study states that people who sleep too much will actually disrupt the body's sleep patterns and biological clock (circadian rhythm). This then causes a person to become tired after a day of sleep.

Preferably, adjust the time to sleep when fasting properly

Sleep has a cycle, which lasts between 80-120 minutes or an average of 90 minutes per cycle. In one sleep cycle, there are several stages of sleep which will certainly affect sleep patterns during fasting.

The cycle stages are one, two, three, four and REM cycles (rapid eye movement) If you sleep in cycles one and two, then this is the easiest time for you to be awakened. Whereas if you enter the REM cycle the conditions when you are rather difficult to wake up, and cycles three and four are the most difficult stages to be awakened.

When your condition prolongs your sleep, which is one to two hours from normal time, then you will enter the third cycle, four or REM. Because you enter a cycle that is difficult to wake up, as a result when you wake up, you do not feel refreshed or even worse than before going to bed.

The best way to restore sleep patterns when fasting is to find out how many hours of sleep are right for you and then do them well, even during holidays or weekends.
