A study shows that people who suffer from gout can reduce by half the risk of recurrent attacks by eating around 20 cherries a day.

Eating 20 cherries per day can reduce gout pain

A study published in a journal Arthritis & Rheumatism studied as many as 633 participants with gout who were advised to consume at least 20 cherries a day for two days. As a result, participants who consumed cherries were 35 percent at lower risk of gout.

When the cherry is combined with allopurinol - drugs to reduce uric acid levels in the blood, this can reduce the risk of gout attack as much as 75 percent lower.

Cherry extract can reduce 40 percent of the risk of inflammation

Gout occurs when uric acid builds up in the body to form crystals in the joints and surrounding tissues. This causes an inflammatory reaction that causes pain and swelling.

Generally, gout attacks tend to recur at the joints of the toes, knees and ankles.Previously, in a small study, researchers had suggested eating cherries and cherry products that could reduce uric acid levels and inflammation in the body.

For this study, the researchers switched to doing research online by involving 633 participants who had gout attacks in the past year. The medical records of the participants were used to confirm their diagnosis of gout.

Participants were asked to answer a questionnaire about various potential factors that could affect the risk of gout, including the effect of consuming cherries or cherry extract within two days before being attacked by gout. After tthe three months free from inflammation, they were asked again to answer the same question.

The result is :

  • Taking two servings of cherries regularly for the past two days has a 50% lower risk of gout
  • Taking cherry extract in the last two days has a 40% lower risk of getting inflammation due to gout
