Distended stomach is one of the health problems which sometimes is not taken seriously. Even though it interferes with appearance, a distended stomach can also cause various health problems later on. One of the causes of a distended stomach is a poor diet. Here are some types of foods that can cause a distended stomach:

Processed grains (refined grain)

A study shows those who take a program to lose weight by eating foods derived from whole grains or whole grain more decreased the amount of fat from the abdominal area when compared to those who consumed regular bread and white rice. Those who also consume whole grain turns out to have decreased levels C-reactive protein (CRP) is quite significant. CRP is an indicator of inflammation in the body and is associated with heart disease.

Whole grain are all types of seeds (such as rice, wheat, barley) that has not been processed. Food that comes from whole grain still contains various types of vitamins, minerals, and complete fiber. Whole grain which has been processed and processed is called refined grain. This processing is done to increase the storability of the seeds. Examples of products refined grain is white rice and flour.

Research conducted by Pennsylvania State University divided 50 obese adults into two groups. One group was asked to consume the product whole grain while other groups were asked not to consume whole grain at all. After 12 weeks, the group consumed whole grain lose weight up to 3.6 kg. While groups that do not consume whole grain lose weight on average 5 kg. But the most decrease in belly fat occurs in those who consume whole grain although total weight loss is more common in groups that consume processed grains. CRP value in the group consuming whole grain also dropped by 38%, while there was no decrease in CRP rates in the other groups.

Margarine

The type of fat that causes a distended stomach is a type of trans fat and saturated fat. Trans fat is a by-product of processing oil from a liquid form to a solid form, for example margarine. Trans fat is commonly used in the fast food industry and snacks because it can increase the shelf life of food. Although currently trans fats have started to be banned from food, there is nothing wrong with checking back on the food labels found in the packaged foods you consume. Besides margarine, shortening also contains trans fat. Be careful if there are components in the food package.

High fat food

Saturated fats are usually found in oil, meat, and processed. You can consume saturated fat, but it should be limited, not more than 5-6% of your total daily calorie needs. If it's excessive, it will increase the amount of fat in the body including making your stomach distended. Processed meat (such as sausages, nuggets, ham) usually tends to contain high saturated fat. Fast food also has a small amount of saturated fat, mainly because most are processed by frying or deep fried.

Types of fat that are good for the body are unsaturated fats, many of which are found in olive oil, salmon, and nuts. You can use olive oil as an alternative to cooking and switch to eating seafood such as fish instead of eating red meat and processed meat.

Milk

Depending on the type, milk can contribute to the formation of belly fat. Types of milk that contain a lot of fat like whole milk can trigger fat buildup, which makes the stomach bloated. Besides whole milk This type of sweetened condensed milk can also cause a distended stomach because of its high sugar content. If you want to eat milk, choose a type of low fat or nonfat milk. You can also replace the type of milk you drink into nuts-based milk such as soy milk, almond milk, or cashew milk.

Soda

Soda consumption is associated with an increase in waist circumference, which means that more and more you consume soda, the risk of having a distended stomach gets bigger. In addition to a distended stomach, consumption of soda is also associated with the risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and health problems in the teeth (such as cavities and tooth loss). But if you then replace the soda that you normally drink with this type of soda diet, it does not mean then you are free from the risk of disease. A study shows that those who consume diet soda tend to have a greater waist circumference than those who consume regular soda. The risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome is also higher in those who consume diet soda when compared to those who do not consume soda at all.
