Why are there several types of immunizations that must be repeated?
Important immunization is given to babies, even from newborns, to improve the baby's immune system and prevent babies from getting various infectious diseases. Immunization works by entering a virus that has been tamed so that the body knows the virus. So, when a virus enters the body, the body already has provisions to fight it.
Many immunizations whose gifts must be repeated many times. Sometimes, just one gift is not enough to strengthen the immune system in response to the incoming virus. Repeated immunization can generate a better immune response. In addition, several times immunization also aims to provide additional protection. Some immunization vaccines provide a low level of protection after one administration, so further administration can provide greater protection.
What immunizations should be given more than once?
Some types of immunizations that must be repeated several times in children are:
1. DPT
DPT immunization is given to children to prevent diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus. This immunization is given five times. First given at 2 months or at the earliest at 6 weeks. Furthermore, it is given at 4 months and 6 months. The fourth DPT immunization is given at the age of 18 months and finally given at the age of 5 years.
After that, the child can be given Td or Tdap vaccine at the age of 10-12 years as booster to protect children from tetanus and diphtheria. Furthermore, booster this can be given every 10 years.
2. Hepatitis B (HB)
This immunization is given 3 times to prevent children from hepatitis B. This vaccine is best given first time within 12 hours after the child is born. After that, the second hepatitis B vaccine is given when the baby is 1-2 months old. And, the third hepatitis B vaccine is given to babies aged 6-18 months. When the administration is combined with DPT, this immunization is given to infants aged 2, 3, and 4 months.
3. Polio
Polio vaccine is given to prevent polio in children. This vaccine is given 4 times. The first administration of the polio vaccine is carried out as soon as the baby is born. After that, the second, third and fourth vaccines were given to infants aged 2, 3 and 4 months. At the age of 18 months, the polio vaccine booster can be given.
4. Pneumococci (PCV)
This vaccine is given to protect children from bacteria that cause meningitis and pneumonia. PCV is given 4 times. In children aged less than one year, PCV is given every two months, such as at ages 2, 4, and 6 months. The four PCV vaccines are given to infants aged 12-15 months.
5. Measles
Measles vaccine is given to prevent measles. This vaccine is given first to 9-month-old babies. After that, continue the second time at the age of 18 months and the third giving at the age of 6-7 years or when the child is just entering school. The second measles vaccine does not need to be given if the child has received the MMR vaccine.
6. MMR
The MMR vaccine is given to prevent children from experiencing disease mumps (mumps), measles (measles), and rubella (German measles). If the child has received a measles vaccine at the age of 9 months, then the MMR vaccine is given at the age of 15 months (minimum distance of 6 months from the measles vaccine). Provision of the second MMR vaccine (booster) is done when the child is 5 years old.
7. Rotavirus
Rotavirus immunization is given to prevent children from infectious diseases due to rotavirus, such as diarrhea. The monovalent rotavirus vaccine consisting of one type of virus is given twice, ie at the age of 6-14 weeks and after 4 weeks from the first administration. Meanwhile, the pentavalent rotavirus vaccine which consists of several types of viruses is given three times, namely at the age of 2 months, 4 months and 6 months.
