Watch out! Watching Too Much TV Develops Sociopathic Traits in Children

Medical Video: What Makes a Psychopath?

The more often your child spends time in front of the TV as a child, the more likely they are to become a sociopath in his future. Such is the conclusion drawn from a study of a pediatric journal published by a number of University of Otaga researchers in New Zealand.

It should be noted, the study ruled out the possibility that antisocial tendencies that had already been embedded in children were not a factor in why a child watched TV more often. The researchers actually found a reciprocal relationship between watching TV too often from an early age and the development of antisocial behavior when growing up.

"Children who love watching sadistic programs on television tend to show sadistic behavior in the future, while people who watch TV too often tend to have bad behavior later," the researchers said.

Research has been carried out on 1,000 children born in 1972 to 1973 in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand. When they are five years old, children begin to be interviewed about their TV viewing habits every 2 years. Researchers then compared the information they had obtained with a record of participant crimes at the age of 17-26 years, including armed robbery, murder, dangerous attacks, rape, attacking people with animals, and vandalism with violence were recorded separately.

Researchers have analyzed similarities in aggressive, antisocial, and negative emotions in the same participants aged 21-26 years.

Antisocial nature, or what is often referred to as "sociopathic" or "psychopathic" is a condition in which a person cannot feel empathy for the surroundings and is often associated with antisocial attitudes and attitudes that are contrary to law such as wild compulsive (lying continuously without realizing it), stealing, damaging property, and violence.

Not related to other risk factors

The researchers found that children who watch TV more often will commit criminal acts as adults. In fact, every hour when the average child watches TV at night, their risk of committing a crime will increase by 30%. The relationship between crime and watching TV disappears; however, after the researchers adjusted it to factors that could potentially avoid this.

In fact, after adjusting for other factors such as socioeconomic status, childhood experiences around aggressive and antisocial behavior, or parental factors, many researchers found a close relationship between children who watched TV and diagnosed antisocial attitudes as adults. They also found a connection between watching TV with negative emotions and aggressive attitude.

But this discovery cannot be explained by antisocial children who watch TV more often and grow as antisocial adults.

"In fact, children who often watch TV will show antisocial attitudes and behavior," said Lindsay Robertson, one of the researchers.

Although the reason for watching TV can be a factor in the formation of antisocial attitudes is still unclear (too much explanation about the possible causes of this) the researchers say that there is one thing that is clear: reducing the time to watch children is very beneficial.

"Antisocial attitudes are a big problem in society," said a researcher named Bob Hacox. "We do not specifically blame TV as a cause of antisocial attitudes, but we recommend that you reduce the amount of time watching TV can reduce the number of antisocial tendencies in society."
