Intrauterine Device (IUD) is one of several types of contraception with a shape resembling the letter T. According toAmerican Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), a powerful IUD to prevent pregnancy with a failure rate of less than one percent during the initial year of use. But in fact, not a few women who were conceded were pregnant despite using an IUD. I wonder why? Then, is there a risk of getting pregnant using this IUD?
Already using an IUD, can you still get pregnant?

This condition usually occurs when the position of the IUD shifts from its initial location, whether it is only partially or out of the uterus, as told by Jessica Shepherd, MD, an assistant lecturer in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine.
Another reason is that the new hormonal IUD will work effectively when installed on the first seven days of the menstrual period. If a hormonal IUD is not installed in the menstrual cycle, the new IUD will be effective seven days later.
What are the risks that might occur during pregnancy using an IUD?
The main task of the IUD is to prevent pregnancy, so there will certainly be a dangerous risk for mothers and prospective babies if they are pregnant using an IUD. In this case, the obstetrician will usually recommend that the IUD be removed immediately to maintain safety and health when you are pregnant.
Well, some of the following risks that are feared will occur if the IUD is still attached while pregnant:
1. Infection of the amniotic fluid
Women who are pregnant using an IUD are at risk of developing chorioamnionitis infection. This infection attacks the amniotic fluid which functions to protect the baby while in the womb. Chorioamnionitis cannot be considered trivial because it has the potential to threaten the life of the mother and fetus in the womb.
2. Premature birth
Women who still use IUDs during pregnancy are at risk up to five times greater for giving birth to premature babies, compared to pregnant women who do not use an IUD.
However, even though women who are declared pregnant with still using an IUD immediately release, the possibility of experiencing a premature birth will indeed decrease. It's just not completely gone.
3. Miscarriage
Just like premature births, women who suddenly get pregnant when using an IUD are at risk of miscarriage to around 40-50 percent compared to other women.
4. Ectopic pregnancy
There are around 0.1 percent of IUD users who experience an ectopic pregnancy, quoted from Live Science. Ectopic pregnancy, or what is known as pregnancy outside the womb, occurs when the fertilized egg by sperm does not develop in the uterus, but in the fallopian tube.
5. Abruptio placenta
Another condition that may occur if the IUD is still attached during pregnancy is placental abruption. Abruptio placenta is characterized by placenta which is released from the uterus before labor.
