Medical Video: Weaning Babies from Breast Milk Medical Course
When exactly is the right time to start weaning? And what exactly do you do when weaning?
You have to wait until the baby is not six (26 weeks) before you start introducing solid food to the baby, both if he is breastfed exclusively or given formula milk (or both).
But, there may be several other conditions or reasons that indicate that it's time to wean your baby.
There are three different types of weaning.
1. Joint weaning
The natural weaning process starts after the baby consumes food other than breast milk, such as water, juice, solid food and other milk. However, most of us just think weaning when babies start consuming less milk, until breast milk can actually be replaced by other foods and drinks.
2. Weaning is determined by the baby
Sometimes, the baby will decide for himself when he has consumed enough milk. This can make you disappointed, sad, or even feel rejected, especially if you want to breastfeed your baby for a longer time. Talking to a nutritionist or a doctor can help you. But keep in mind that sometimes baby rejection can also be temporary.
3. Weaning is determined by the mother
You feel you have enough breastfeeding and it's time to stop. Mothers of babies over one year or toddlers sometimes feel this way, especially if your baby is still breastfeeding often, especially at night.
Weaning can also be done because of a doctor's advice, for example if you are on certain medications or for other medical reasons. If you don't want to wean your baby, tell your doctor about your feelings. Sometimes weaning is not the only choice.
