There are many types of contraceptive methods that you can choose if you and your partner don't want to have children or don't want children anymore. However, in choosing the right contraceptive method, you must really understand what its properties and efficacy are. If you are not careful, the pregnancy will still occur even though you have done various ways to prevent it. Each method does have different effectiveness levels to prevent pregnancy. So, you need to know what methods of contraception are ineffective and which you should avoid because they are not effective. Do not let you and your partner choose the wrong one.

What is a contraceptive method?

Before finding out which method is the least effective, you must first understand what is meant by the method of contraception. Basically, a contraceptive method is an attempt made to prevent fertilization of eggs by sperm which can cause pregnancy.

To measure whether a contraceptive method is included as effective in preventing pregnancy, a comparison or prevalence of pregnancy is usually used. If of the 100 people who have sex, fewer than 20 women are found to be pregnant, so the method is considered effective. However, if more than 21 women are pregnant, the method is less or ineffective in preventing pregnancy.

Isn't sexual intercourse at all including contraceptive methods?

Not having sex or often called abstinence is a condition where someone refuses or abstains from sexual behavior. Experts are still debating whether abstinence means not penetrating the vagina or completely abstaining from any sexual behavior. To be sure, abstinence means that someone does not have sex with another person for a certain period of time (waiting until marriage or finding the right partner) or for an unspecified time (for life).

Literally, not having sex at all can indeed prevent pregnancy. However, the purpose of someone not having sex is not always to prevent pregnancy. A person may reject sexual activity for reasons of religion or life principles. In addition, although abstinence is one method of contraception, this method cannot be used as a comparison to other methods because the nature of abstinence is definitely effective.

Ineffective contraceptive method

So far the most commonly used contraceptive method to delay or prevent pregnancy is a male condom. In addition to condoms, many women also take birth control pills and put on a spiral (IUD). However, some people still use methods that are less effective so that pregnancy still occurs. Note the following three ineffective contraceptive methods that have been sorted starting from the most effective to the least effective.

1. Outside ejaculation

External ejaculation also known as the intercourse method is interrupted. This method requires the man to pull the penis out of the vagina before ejaculating so that semen containing sperm will not fertilize the female egg. Many use this method as emergency contraception when not planning sexual intercourse and not storing condom supplies. In fact, this tactic is less effective in preventing pregnancy. Not all men can easily stop penetration and pull the penis out before it's too late. As a result, the penis will ejaculate in or near the vagina. This certainly risks causing conception. The New York Times reported that out of 100 people, a total of 22 women who had intercourse with the interrupted intercourse method would still be pregnant. That is, the chance of success of this method in preventing pregnancy is 78%.

2. Calendar system (periodic abstinence)

The calendar system contraception method can be used as the opposite of pregnancy planning. Women can use it to track the menstrual cycle and its fertile period so that during the fertile period the woman and her partner will abstain from sex until the woman does not ovulate. This method allows couples to make love without safety with the possibility of a smaller pregnancy from unprotected sex during ovulation.

However, this method is less effective as a preventive measure because calculating a safe period for sex without contraception is not an easy thing. If there is a slight miscalculation, pregnancy can occur. According to data obtained from Office for Population Research at Princeton University, of the 100 people who have sex with the contraceptive method of the calendar system, 24 women will get pregnant. These data indicate that the possibility of a calendar system successfully preventing pregnancy is only at 76%.

3. Spermicide

Of all the contraceptive methods that you may have heard or tried, spermicides are the most ineffective ways to prevent pregnancy. Spermicide itself contains chemicals that will kill sperm cells so they cannot fertilize the egg. The forms vary, from gels, creams, foams, to capsules and sheets of film that dissolve in the vagina. Its use also varies depending on the type of spermicide used by you and your partner.

As a contraceptive, the success rate of spermicide is very low, at 74%. This means that out of 100 couples who make love with the spermicide contraceptive method, there will be 28 women who become pregnant. Spermicide is indeed not practical to use when making love. You have to wait for a while until the chemical completely dissolves in the vagina or attaches to the penis perfectly before penetration. If it's too late, sperm cells will stay alive and fertilize the egg. In addition, if sex lasts long enough and penetration does not only occur once, you must repeat the use of spermicide because the effect has been reduced.

There is also the risk of using imperfect spermicides, especially if spermicides are inserted into the vagina. So, you should not use spermicide as the only contraceptive. You can apply it to male or female condoms for better protection.
