If you experience itching or redness after using certain skin care products, sign that your skin is sensitive. Some owners of sensitive skin even complain about the skin so it feels sore because it is dry and flaky. This skin problem is most likely due to the ingredients contained in the product.

That's why you should always look at the composition label of each cosmetic and skincare product before buying it.

Owners of sensitive skin must avoid these ingredients

1. Methylisothiazone

Methylisothiazolinone (MI) is a preservative commonly found in skin care products, including wet wipes, shampoos, conditioners, bath soaps, moisturizers, sunscreens, deodorants, and a number of cosmetic products.

MI is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis. According to the St John 's Institute of Dermatology in London, as many as 10% of people who have sensitive skin also have allergies to methylisothiazone.

Methylisothiazolinone has many aliases. Avoid products that include these names on the composition label:

  • 2-Methyl-3 (2H) -isothiazolone
  • 3 (2H) - Isothiazolone
  • 2-methyl-
  • Caswell No. 572A
  • 2-Methyl-4-isothiazoline-3-one
  • Neolone; Neolone 950; NeoloneCapG; Neolone M 10; Neolone M 50; Neolone PE
  • MIT Optiphen
  • MIT OriStar
  • ProClin 150; ProClin 950
  • SPX
  • Zonen MT

2. Essential oil

Not all beauty products that are labeled organic or natural because they contain essential oils are safe for sensitive skin.

You should avoid these products because natural ingredients are difficult to be tested for medical safety. Acidic pH levels of some plant extracts such as oranges and mint (including peppermint) tend to cause irritation to the sensitive skin

3 Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulphate (SLES)

SLS and SLES are foam-making chemicals in soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and detergents.

Sulphate is made from mineral salts containing sulfur. This can cause chronic dry skin and itching all over the body. Owners of sensitive skin should use a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner.

4. Bismuth Oxychloride

Bismuth oxychloride is often used in mineral-based makeup products to provide a final appearance matte or shimmery.

For people who have sensitive skin, this component can cause a reddish, itchy, and hot rash.

5. Perfumes or fragrances

Avoid cosmetic products or skincare fragrances or any type of perfume. Chemical and natural ingredients that are used as fragrances can cause skin irritation in sensitive people.

6. Synthetic petrochemicals and emollients

Chemical thickener such as liquid paraffins and mineral oils in certain lotion, shampoo, soap, moisturizer and skin creams can cause excessive skin oil production. As a result, sensitive skin is more easily irritated and makes the skin dull because of clogged pores.

If your skin is sensitive, use products that contain vegetable oils, such as jojoba oil and almond oil.
