Medical Video: What to do during a nosebleed

Blood out of the nose or called sudden nosebleeds often makes you panic. You need to know how to deal with nosebleeds properly. When there is a nosebleed, most people just lie down or tilt their heads back. However, the actual method is not true. Then, how about first aid for the right nosebleed.

This is how to deal with nosebleeds quickly

1. Sit up straight and lean forward

Make sure your position remains upright and aim your body slightly forward. By staying upright, you can reduce blood pressure in the blood vessels of your nose. This can also prevent more blood from coming out.

Also, by leaning forward, you can prevent blood from getting back into the nose or airway, or being swallowed, which can irritate your stomach.

If you lie down, the blood will actually re-enter and can clog the airway.

2. Pinch the nostrils

Use your thumb and index finger to pinch your nostrils for 10-15 minutes. During this, you can try to breathe through your mouth.

Pinching the nostrils is useful to put pressure on the bleeding point in the nasal septum so that blood stops flowing.

3. Don't breathe through your nose first

To prevent rebleeding, do not breathe through the nose and do not bend for several hours after the nosebleed. You can also gently apply some petroleum jelly to the inside of your nose using cotton or your finger.

4. Use cold compresses

To deal with nosebleeds, you can use cold compresses on your nose. However, do not directly attach ice cubes to the nose. Wrap ice cubes with a soft cloth or clean towel, and stick them to the nose to stop the nosebleed.

5. Immediately go to the doctor, if the nosebleeds have not stopped

If re-bleeding occurs, blow strongly to clean your nose from blood clots. Then spray both sides of your nose with a decongestant nasal spray containing oxymetazoline (Afrin).

Also, try again pinching your nostrils. However, if nosebleeds don't stop too, immediately seek medical help.
