Every medication for high blood pressure has been shown to reduce blood pressure. However, there are some people who don't work if they only use one type of drug. If first-line treatment (first line drug) You don't work optimally to lower blood pressure, you may need help from second-line high blood pressure medications. Anything? See below.
The choice of second-line high blood pressure drugs
1. Diuretic drugs
Diuretic drugs are drugs that work to drain excess water and sodium (salt) from the body through urine. That way, the pressure on your blood vessel wall will decrease.
Diuretics are often prescribed by doctors as first-line drugs for hypertension. However, diuretics are also commonused as a second-line blood pressure drug because the benefits are more or less the same as first-line drugs.BSeveral studies have shown that blood pressure has decreased after being given diuretic drugs and several other combinations of antihypertensive drugs.
Hydrochlorothiazide is onejenis drug diuretic class thiazide ywhich is often used to lower blood pressure. This medicine can be taken every day as a single drug. However the role of thiazide drugs as first-line treatment or even second-line drugs still reap debate. Thiazide group diuretics are generally less effective in impaired renal function because they can worsen kidney function and increase the risk of hyperlipidemia if used for prolonged use.
2. Vasodilators
Vasodilators are drugs to relax the smooth muscles of blood vessels, especially the heart arteries, so the effect widens the diameter of blood vessels. When blood vessels dilate, blood flows more smoothly through blood vessels so the heart does not have to work hard to pump blood. This will have a direct impact on reducing blood pressure.
Other blood pressure drugs, such as calcium channel blockers also help dilate blood vessels. However, vasodilator drugs that work directly on blood vessel walls are hydralazine, minoxidil, and diazoxide.
3. Alpha blockers
Alpha blockers relax the muscles that tighten and help arteries stay open. This type of drug works by keeping the hormone norepinephrine (noradrenalin) stable so as not to strain the arterial and venous walls. This drug causes blood vessels to remain relaxed and wide open so that blood flow smoothly.
In addition to improving blood circulation and lowering blood pressure, this drug can also help increase urine production in adult men who have prostate disorders. Frequently prescribed alpha blood pressure blockers include doxazosin, prazosin, and terazosin.
4. Alpha-beta blockers
Alpha-beta blockers work the same way as beta blockers. This drug is usually prescribed for hypertensive patients who are at high risk of heart failure. The effects of this treatment are decreased heart rate, blood pressure, and also heart tension. Not only that, this drug also helps prevent strokes and kidney disorders.
Some alpha-beta blockers, which are often prescribed as drugs for high blood pressure, are carvedilol and labetalol.
5. Aldosterone antagonists
This drug is commonly used in conjunction with other drugs, such as diuretics to treat high blood pressure. This drug works by blocking chemicals (aldosterone) in your body and decreasing the body's sodium and water levels to be stable. By reducing high blood pressure, you can prevent strokes, heart attacks and kidney problems. In addition, this drug can also be used to treat congestive heart failure that occurs after a heart attack.
Aldosterone antagonist drugs that are often prescribed by doctors are spironolactone (Aldactone) and eplerenone (Inspra).
Important to note
The combination of two drugs is generally more effective than a single drug for controlling your blood pressure. Sometimes a third drug, or more, is needed to achieve stable blood pressure.
Make sure you always consult a doctor before using high blood pressure drugs, be it first or second line. This is done to avoid all the problems that might occur from the use of these drugs.
