Definition
What is nephrostomy?
Normally, urine flows from the kidney to the bladder through the muscular canal, the ureter. One or both of these ureters can become blocked. Nephrostomy is a procedure to drain urine from the kidneys using a catheter. This procedure specializes in X-ray and scan.
What are the benefits of undergoing a nephrostomy?
Cancer patients need a nephrostomy if the cancer blocks one or both ureters.
Prevention & warning
What do I need to know before undergoing a nephrostomy?
In general, problems can be handled by surgery. However, surgery is quite time-consuming and nephrostomy can help your kidneys work. Some people need a nephrostomy for only a period of time and some others need permanent nephrostomy. Your doctor will provide further information.
Process
What should I do before undergoing a nephrostomy?
Discuss with your doctor about medications you are taking, allergies, or other health conditions before undergoing surgery. You will be given instructions before surgery, such as whether you are allowed to eat before surgery.
What is the process of nephrostomy?
Radiologists will insert a catheter through your back and kidneys using needles and guidewire. If the radiologist is sure the needle is in the right position, the needle will be replaced with a catheter. The catheter will be fitted with a plastic bag to hold urine.
What should I do after undergoing a nephrostomy?
You need to rest in bed for a few hours until you recover. The catheter needs to be in place until the cause of the ureteral blockage has been treated.
You are allowed to go home the same day.
Complications
What complications can occur?
Risk of complications in low nephrostomy. Possible complications are:
- bleeding
- infection
- urine leak
- allergic reaction
- the occurrence of a hole in one organ caused by a needle
- radiation exposure
You will continue to be monitored so that problems can be addressed immediately.
