Eyelid infections in medical language are known as blepharitis. This eyelid disease can be caused by a bacterial infection or associated with other diseases, such as seborrheic dermatitis or rosacea. As a result, the eyelids become swollen and red. This infection can be experienced by all age groups, but this condition is not contagious.

What causes blepharitis?

There are three types of blepharitis divided by location and cause, namely anterior, posterior and mixed blepharitis (a combination of anterior and posterior blefaritis).

Anterior blepharitis can be caused due to a bacterial infection Staphylococcus or related to the condition of seborrheic dermatitis. This type is characterized by inflammation of the outer side of the eyelid where the lashes attach.

Posterior blepharitis can be caused by a blockage of the Meibom gland (a gland located along the back edge of the eyelid) or associated with the condition rosacea. This type is characterized by inflammation of the inner edge of the eyelid that touches the eyeball.

What are the characteristics and symptoms of blepharitis?

This infection of the eyelid will cause the eyelid to become red and swollen. Symptoms that can arise, such as:

  • Itching, pain, and red eyelids stick together
  • Eyelashes that are crusty or oily
  • Heat sensation on the eyelids
  • Sensitivity to increased light (photophobia)
  • Abnormal eyelash growth or loss of eyelashes in severe cases

This condition generally affects both eyes and usually one eye will appear more inflamed. Symptoms are felt more severe in the morning.

How to treat blefaritis?

The key treatment for all types of blepharitis is to keep the eyelids clean and free of crust. Warm compresses on the eye can soften the crust that attaches to the edges of the eyelids and eyelashes. Then rub the eyelid with a mixture of water and baby shampoo gently.

Limiting or stopping the use of eye makeup when treating blepharitis is often recommended, because the use of eye makeup will make the cleanliness of the eyelids more difficult to maintain.

If it doesn't improve, the doctor will provide additional drugs, such as:

  • Antibiotics if there is a bacterial infection
  • Steroids in the form of drops or eye ointments to reduce inflammation
  • Drugs to improve the immune system
  • Treatment for the underlying disease, such as seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea

During treatment, you should eat foods that are high in omega-3 because it can help reduce the symptoms of blefaritis. Examples of foods that contain omega-3s include sardines, tuna, salmon, nuts, seeds, and green vegetables.
