Sleeping with makeup that still sticks makes it hard for your facial skin to breathe

According to Dr. Samer Jaber, MD from Washington Square Dermatology in New York, sleeping habits with makeup are just the same as making faces as loose fields for growth stubborn blackheads and zits. Because the makeup that is still attached will stick together mixed with dust and pollution from the outside, sweat, until the oil on the face clogs the pores.

Sleep at night not only to rest the organs of the body, the skin also rested. Skin requires sleep to repair and renew cells after exposure to various free radicals. If you let your face still full of makeup during sleep, it means you prevent the regeneration of the facial skin.

Free radicals from the surrounding environment trapped in the face can break down collagen which plays an important role in tightening the skin. As a result, over time a fine line will appear on the face and the more it becomes wrinkled. So, sleeping with makeup will only increase the chances of your skin being damaged and premature aging, the effects of which are quite difficult to reverse.

Sleeping with your face still on makeup is also prone to make skin dry and irritated. For example, the habit of leaving mascara during sleep will clog the eyelash follicles and trigger irritation (blefaritis). Mascara particles and eyeliner that fall into the eye during sleep will also be susceptible to trigger red eye irritation (conjunctivitis).

How to wash your face properly

That is why you should not underestimate the importance of cleaning makeup before going to bed. But if you wear makeup, you might notice that just by washing your face, the skin is not necessarily really clean. The following are effective steps for cleaning makeup before going to bed:

  • Wash your hands before cleaning your face, wearing makeup, or touching your face. If your hands are dirty, bacteria or dust can stick to your skin.
  • Use special makeup cleansers for each particular makeup. For example, eye makeup cleansers and lipstick (two areas that are usually stubborn to be cleaned), and regular makeup cleansers for other facial parts.
  • After that, dry it and try rubbing it with clean cotton. If there are still remnants seen on cotton, the marks are not clean. You can use a facial cleanser that suits your needs, for example toner cleanser, micellar water, cleansing balm, milk cleanser, or cleansing oil.
  • Wash your face with your face soap as usual. Wash your face with twisting hand movements until you feel the makeup has been washed away. You can also use a sponge for the face or cotton to wipe off the rest of the cleanser from the face.
  • Rinse face with cold water. Washing your face with cold water can close open pores and increase circulation. Don't be stingy when rinsing your face. Really make sure the remaining makeup residue and soap is wiped clean. When in doubt, rinse your face once more with your hands.
  • Dry your face by patting your face lightly using a towel, or rubbing it gently. Don't rub it.
  • After washing your face, continue with your night rejime skincare as usual. Don't forget to apply moisturizer.

If you are lazy enough to get out of bed just to wash your face, always be prepared for special wet wipes to remove makeup or provide cotton and facial cleansers beside your bed. You can clean the mascara that sticks to you on the bed. Easy, right?

Have a good sleep!
