Differences in IVF and ICSI IVF programs
The main objectives of the IVF and ICSI methods are the same, namely helping couples who experience fertility problems to have children. Both of these methods are equally designed to carry out fertilization outside the mother's body. However, when the prospective fetus is considered ready, it will be inserted into the uterus so that it can grow and develop normally. The biggest difference between IVF and ICSI is how the process of bringing together sperm and eggs causes fertilization.
In IVF, or commonly called the conventional IVF method, sperm will still swim and penetrate the egg wall, so that fertilization occurs, the difference from normal fertilization is the place of fertilization. But when ICSI is done, the sperm no longer has to penetrate its own egg wall, but is assisted with technology and medical equipment to make sperm enter the egg easily.

Who are the men who need ICSI?
ICSI is usually done when IVF is not successful. In addition, ICSI tends to be more for couples whose men experience fertility problems. Thus, ICSI can be used as a solution for men who have the following conditions:
- Produce a small amount of sperm
- There are problems with sperm, such as abnormal sperm shape and poor ability to move.
- Can not ejaculate or remove sperm
Are ICSI side effects the same as IVF?
When compared with IVF, ICSI has the opportunity to reduce disease genes greater than IVF. This happens because in the ICSI method, sperm is not given the opportunity to enter the wall of the ovum with its own ability. In normal circumstances, sperm that can enter and penetrate the egg wall are the best sperm among other sperm. So if ICSI is done, then we do not know whether the sperm is the best or not because sperm enters the egg with the help of medical devices.

What is the success rate of ICSI compared to IVF?
In general, the success of ICSI fertilization is higher compared to IVF or conventional IVF methods. About 50-80% of eggs can be successfully fertilized by sperm if using the ICSI method. But for the success of the pregnancy until the fetus is born, depending on the condition of the mother and the following are the estimates:
- Mothers aged 18-34 years, success can reach 44%
- Mothers aged 35-37 years, success reached 39%
- Mothers aged 40-42 years, then success reaches 21%
- Mothers aged 43-44 years, success only reached 11%
- While mothers with more than 45 years of success are only around 2%.
It can be concluded that IVF, IVF or ICSI programs are very dependent on the age of the mother who will be pregnant. The older mothers who conceive the more likely to experience various problems during pregnancy and during the birth process.
