Medical Video: Management of Dental Trauma by Dr. Emad Youssef

1. Definition

What is dental trauma?

This guide includes injury to the teeth (usually the front). Often, the conscious wound is the bleeding from the gums. Teeth become a little loose. These small wounds usually heal within 3 days. The next common wound is the location of the wrong tooth (usually pushed inward). It usually returns to its normal position within a few weeks without any treatment. Cracked teeth need to be examined by a dentist. Avulsion is an emergency condition.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Signs and symptoms include:

  • Tooth pain that may be sharp or constant throbbing. In some people, pain only occurs when there is pressure on the teeth.
  • Swelling around the teeth.
  • Fever or headache.
  • Bad taste of infected teeth.

2. How to overcome them

What should I do?

Although the main teeth cannot be successfully re-installed, permanent teeth need to be returned to their place as soon as possible. The best results occur if the teeth are re-installed within 15 minutes. After 2 hours, placement will be useless. Ideally, the teeth should be returned to the place in the event of an accident:

  • Clean teeth with saliva or water.
  • Put it back in its place in the right way.
  • Press the teeth down using your thumb until the top of the tooth is the same as the other teeth.
  • Bite the cloth to stabilize the teeth until you arrive at the dentist's place.

Home Care for Dental Trauma

Stick pieces of ice on the injured part of the gum, unless this increases pain. If you are still sick, take acetaminophen and ibuprofen. If there are loose teeth, eat soft food for 3 days. If the teeth come out of the normal position, try repositioning with a little pressure using the fingers. If the teeth are broken and dental care cannot be done immediately, while covering with melted wax. A delay of several days will cause an infection.

When do I have to see a doctor?

Go to the dentist immediately if:

  • Permanent teeth pushed out
  • Most teeth are cut off
  • Visible red dots on cracked teeth
  • Severe pain
  • Bleeding does not stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure (for bleeding due to missing teeth, bite gauze)
  • Teeth pushed out of their original position.

Check with a dentist if:

  • Baby teeth have been pushed out due to trauma
  • A small portion of tooth is loose
  • You can see crack lines on the teeth
  • Teeth are sensitive to cold liquids
  • Teeth tend to be more loose
  • New symptoms appear
  • Teeth become sensitive to hot or cold fluids during the following week
  • Darker colored teeth

3. Prevention

Prevent dental trauma by using a mouth protector while exercising.
