Squint or in medical terms known as strabismus is one of the vision disorders that not only attacks children, but can also attack adults. There are various types of examinations that need to be done to ascertain the type and weight of the eye so that the treatment can be carried out optimally. The following will explain five eye tests or examinations that can be performed on people suspected of having squint eyes.
1. Visus examination (eye acuity test)
A sharp vision or visual examination should be performed on you or children suspected of having squinted eyes to ensure that both eyes have good vision. Not infrequently squint eyes sufferers, especially children, accompanied by lazy eyes or commonly known as amblyopia.
Visual examination can be done according to the age level of the child. In children under 2 years, can be done with a special tool containing pictures that can be mentioned by the child. If the child is able to read the letters properly, an eye sharpness check can be done using the letters of the alphabet, similar to examinations in adults.
2. Eyeball movement test
Moving the eyeball to eight wind directions and also the position of the eye when looking forward is a component that will be assessed in the eye test of this method. A small flashlight will be used as a guide that needs to be followed by the eyes. Every wind direction will also be carried out cover test.
3. Cover test
This check is done to find out if a person with normal-looking eyes actually has a hidden squint condition. The test will be done by closing one side of the eye alternately. Then the eye doctor will see the presence or absence of movement in the eyeball. Under normal circumstances, there will be no movement of the eyeball even if one eye is closed.
4. Hirschberg's eye test
This test is carried out to determine the degree of eye ocularity in the eye that has been seen squinting in a normal position. Examination is done by using a small flashlight that is directed to the eye after you have been asked to see certain objects in the distance.
Under normal circumstances, the light reflection of the flashlight will be right in the middle of the pupil. However, in people with crossed eyes the reflection of light will be in the opposite direction to the direction of the squint. Shifting the reflection of light from the center of the pupil to the point of reflection of the new light will be measured to determine the approximate degree of tilt.
5. Examining the inside of the eyeball
This one eye test is done using a special tool to look inside the eyeball, called funduskopi. This examination needs to be done on both eyes to rule out possible disorders in the eyeball, such as retinoblastoma (eye cancer).
