Medical Video: How Much Sugar Should I Eat Per Day?
Eating too much sugar is associated with weight gain and various diseases, such as diabetes. So, the question often arises whether people with diabetes can still consume sugar? Can people with diabetes not eat sweet foods? Then, how much sugar is too much, which increases the risk of diabetes? Check out the answer here.
Can diabetes patients eat sweet?
If you have diabetes, eating sweet foods can increase blood sugar levels to exceed normal limits. If not controlled and maintained, uncontrolled blood sugar can cause further problems.
In fact, sugar is one of the main energy sources in humans. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate which will be broken down very quickly by the body because of its easy to digest form. This makes sugar the fastest to make glucose or blood sugar, which is less than 15 minutes.
But when diabetes, your body does not produce enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels, or the body does not respond to insulin properly so insulin does not work properly.
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas and helps cells absorb glucose from the blood to be used as energy.
In diabetics, sugar that is broken down into glucose will accumulate in your bloodstream. So that your blood sugar levels tend to be high and cause diabetes.
Even so, sugar does not cause diabetes directly. Eating too much sugar can make you overweight and can trigger diabetes.
Therefore, it does not mean that diabetic patients should not eat sweet or consume sugar at all. They can still eat sweet foods, but by limiting daily sugar intake. This is also one way to prevent diabetes. Diabetics should also replace simple carbohydrates with complex carbohydrates that do not result in a drastic increase in blood sugar.
By planning and eating a healthy diet, you can still eat foods that contain sugar while maintaining your blood sugar levels at normal limits.
What is the maximum sugar intake for diabetic patients?
Maximum sugar intake for diabetic patients is very dependent on how many calories are consumed every day. The amount must also be in accordance with the overall carbohydrate intake.
Diabetes patients generally only focus on total carbohydrates consumed rather than sugar, so there is no daily sugar intake for people with diabetes. Even so, diabetic patients need to know the safe limit of sugar intake to regulate their daily sugar intake.
The limit of sugar intake suggested by the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia per person in one day is 50 grams of sugar, equivalent to 4 tablespoons.
If you routinely move and exercise, you don't need to worry because your body's system can burn many calories. However, for diabetics, you should really control the intake of sugar and carbohydrates so that your blood sugar levels are controlled.
