Most may know the cornea is one part of the eye. But only that. Maybe not many know if it is the cornea and its function for the eyes. Come on, see the following explanation.
What is an Eye Cornea?
The cornea is the outermost protective layer of the eye. Its function is to prevent dirt and foreign matter and filter out UV light that enters the eye. Cornea is an important part of the eye because it determines how well the eye focuses on an object.
In fact, the cornea is a clear layer of the eye that contains various tissues. Unlike other body parts, the cornea has no blood vessels. So, instead, the cornea gets "food" from tears.
Get to know the part of the cornea
The cornea is a very complex network. In the cornea, there are no blood vessels, so corneal nutrition is obtained from tears and aqueous humor. The cornea has three layers, namely:
- Epithelium (ephithelium) is the outermost layer of the cornea. Serves to prevent the entry of foreign objects, and absorb oxygen and nutrients from tears.
- Stroma, located after the epithelium. Stroma is the thickest middle layer and is composed of water and protein so that it is solid and elastic.
- Endothelium (endothelium), located behind the stroma. This layer serves to pump excess fluid in the stroma. Impaired function of the endothelium can cause the stroma to be filled with fluid, causing blurred vision.
Symptoms that occur when the cornea of the eye is infected
Small wounds or infections in the cornea usually heal themselves. Symptoms if there is a corneal disorder:
- Eyes hurt
- Blurry vision
- Watery eyes
- Reddish eyes
- High sensitivity to light
These symptoms are a sign of a more dangerous condition. So you should immediately visit a doctor if you experience these signs.
What conditions can attack the cornea?
There are several health problems that can attack the cornea, namely:
Keratitis
Keratitis is inflammation of the cornea caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Treatments include antibacterial or antifungal eye drops, anti-viral drugs, and steroid eye drops.
Herpes Ocular
Ocular herpes is a persistent viral infection, usually caused by the Herpes Simplex I virus (HSV I). A common sign is a wound on the cornea. Ocular herpes cannot be cured, but antiviral drugs or steroid eye drops can be given to prevent its development.
Herpes Zoster
This disease can occur in people with chickenpox. Herpes Zoster or shingles may cause injury to the cornea which can heal by itself. But antiviral drugs and steroid eye drops can also be prescribed to reduce swelling.
Corneal degeneration such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophy, map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy, fuchs' dystrophy, and lattice dystrophy can also damage the cornea of the eye. Treatment will vary depending on the type of disease.
