Medical Video: Ears 101 : How to Remove Water From Your Ear

Eating water when you swim or bathe is really annoying. This often happens and is often considered a trivial problem. Water that clogs the ears is supposed to dry out for some time. However, as long as the water is still trapped in the ear, it must be really uncomfortable. Usually the sound that you hear becomes like muffled and even in some people, the ear conceding water will cause pain. In addition, the ear that is inserted into the water is susceptible to infection.

You can prevent ear from entering water by rubbing the outside of your ear with a dry towel after swimming or showering. If the water stays in and does not dry or come out of the ear for two to three days, you should see your doctor. You may be prescribed antibiotics to treat infections and relieve pain. To immediately deal with the ear converting water, please try the following methods.

1. Shake the ear lobe

Tilt your head to the side of the ear that has water in it. Try first to shake your head so that water can come out. If it doesn't work, shake your ear lobe that has water in it, still in the head position so that the outside of your ear is facing the shoulder.

2. Suction of water with your palm

To remove water, tilt your head to the troubled side of the ear. Then use the palms of your hands to cover the ears that have water in it, as if your head rests on the palm. Rub your palms against your ears with an up and down motion so that the surface feels flatter. Press your ear firmly and release quickly until you feel the sensation of suction on the ear. Water trapped in the ear should be sucked out.

3. Move your jaw and mouth

The narrow canal that connects the ear cavity to the back of your nostrils can become blocked and swell so that the water gets harder and harder to get out. Stretching the mouth and jaw like chewing and yawning can sometimes help relieve this blocked duct. Try to move your jaw and mouth until your ears feel free again.

4. Drop with water

Prepare warm water (not hot water) and drop it on your ear which enters the water while tilting your head until the ear that has water in it faces up. Let stand for about three seconds and tilt the head to the opposite side. Wait for a moment with the position of the ear that has water in place facing the shoulder until the water flows out.

5. Use a hair dryer

Set the hair dryer (hair dryer) You are at the lowest airspeed and temperature. Give a distance of about 30 centimeters and dry it in a motion close to and away from the ear that has water in it. You can try this method while shaking your ear lobes. The hot air blown in the ear will help the water evaporate faster.

6. Warm compresses

Wet a soft cloth with hot water (no need to boil) and squeeze until the water does not drip from the compress cloth. Tilt the head to the side of the ear that is problematic then attach the compress to the outside of the ear. Let stand for about 30 seconds and release. Wait for one minute before compressing again. Repeat four to five times. If the water has not come out of the ear after compressing it warmly, you can speed up the process by lying down.

7. Ear drops with vinegar and alcohol

To unravel the cerumen (earwax) that might trap water in the ear, you can mix your own ear drops at home. Mix vinegar and alcohol in a balanced measure, about 1: 1. Drop three to four drops on the ear that has water in it. Then, lightly massage the outside of your ear. If water is difficult to get out of your ear due to cerumen blockage, vinegar will help break down this stubborn clot. Meanwhile, alcohol can speed up the evaporation process of water that is trapped in the ear.

Don't use this method if you:

  • have an outer ear infection
  • have a hollow eardrum
  • tympanostomy tube (the tube that is attached to your eardrum)

8. Leave it overnight

Most cases of ear water entering will heal by itself. So, when you want to sleep at night, tilt your body to the troubled side of the ear. Usually during your sleep, water will flow out by yourself and wet the pillow in the morning.
