Marijuana, akacannabis sativa, also known as marijuana, is an intoxicating plant because of its content, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). A study revealed that 30 percent of marijuana users have the potential to experience dependency. People who start using marijuana before the age of 18 have a chance of 4-7 times more likely to experience dependency. Dependence will get worse if marijuana is used every day and users have mental health disorders. And even though the use of marijuana in the medical world is increasingly common, marijuana abuse can still have an adverse effect on the body. Recently, researchers also discovered the effect of marijuana on the user's vision.
The effect of marijuana on vision
A recent study conducted by Thomas Schwitzer on 52 participants (with an age range of 18-35 years) revealed that, consumption of marijuana caused more time needed to channel information from the eye to the brain.
The study was then carried out on 28 participants who had used marijuana at least 7 times a week for several months before the study took place. Then compared to the remaining 24 participants who had never used marijuana before.
This study focuses on a cell in the eye that is located not far from the inner surface of the retina, called retinal ganglion cells. These cells play a role in collecting visual information from the eye, before finally flowing to the brain.
Using an electroretinogram, a method for testing retinal quality, the results of tests conducted showed that participants who used marijuana turned out to take longer (98.6 milliseconds) than participants who had never used marijuana before (88.4 milliseconds) in transmitting information from the eye to the brain.
Unfortunately this research still requires other advanced research and has some limitations on the confounding variables in the study that are not controlled.
How to overcome marijuana dependence?
When you use marijuana, THC contained in it will be absorbed into the blood vessels and circulated throughout the body to the brain. THC then triggers your brain to release the hormone dopamine, this hormone which then effects the feeling of calm in you. But the consumption of marijuana in high doses or, from a sudden low height, can actually cause you to hallucinate until you feel anxious. It's different from consuming marijuana in the form of steam (cigarettes). The effects will make you feel nauseous and vomiting easily.
Unfortunately there is still a lack of available medical treatment that can overcome this marijuana addiction. Until now, only self-behavior and a supportive environment, therapy and the presence of self-motivation can handle this addiction to marijuana.
