Medical Video: Vasectomy
Definition
What is bilateral vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a permanent method of contraception for men. A bilateral vasectomy procedure involves cutting two ejaculatory ducts, which transport sperm from the testicles to your penis. Cutting is done so that sperm do not mix with semen. Semen that does not contain sperm cannot fertilize the ovum, so a vasectomy can be used as a contraceptive method.
When do I need to undergo a bilateral vasectomy?
When you and your partner don't want to use another contraceptive method, you can consider a bilateral vasectomy procedure.
Prevention & warning
What should I know before doing a bilateral vasectomy?
Removal of the ejaculatory duct will not affect your sexual ability, nor the function and sensation of erection. The amount of semen during orgasm will not decrease after you have a vasectomy. It's just that your semen no longer contains sperm. Vasectomy is generally safe and is an effective method, but you also need to understand the possibility of complications before deciding to undergo a vasectomy.
It is important for you to know the warnings and precautions before carrying out this test. If you have questions, consult your doctor for further information and instructions.
Process
What should I do before a bilateral vasectomy?
This procedure is done after you have been given anesthesia, local or total. Before the procedure, you are asked to shave your pubic hair under the supervision of a doctor. Then wash and rinse your genital area thoroughly. You are allowed to have breakfast first before starting the procedure. You will be asked to bring a compress containing ice cubes to support your scrotum when you go to the clinic. It is recommended to ask someone, family member or relationship, to accompany you to go to the hospital.
What is the bilateral vasectomy process?
Bilateral vasectomy procedures last around 15-20 minutes.
The surgeon will make small slices on each side of your scrotum. In some cases, the doctor will only make slices right in the middle of the scrotum. Then, the doctor will cut the ejaculatory duct starting from the base of the testis to the tip of the penis and sewing the two ends so that they are no longer connected to each other.
What should I do after a bilateral vasectomy?
You can go home the same day after carrying out this procedure. Maybe you will feel pain in the testicles for several days.
You can return to your daily routine (work / school) two days later, or a week afterwards if your work includes manual labor and using big energy.
Regular exercise will help you restore your strength to carry out daily activities. Before you start, ask for advice from the team of doctors about sports that are right for you.
The doctor will ask for 1-2 samples of your semen after you have ejaculated 20 times, after surgery. This sample will be tested to check if there are still sperm contained in it.
If you have questions relating to the process of this test, consult your doctor for a better understanding.
