Medical Video: How to prepare for a CT scan

Definition

What is CT neck scan?

CT (computed tomography) scan of the neck is a medical procedure that combines special X-ray equipment with computer imaging to create your visual cervical spine model. Cervical spine is a part of the spine in the neck. Your doctor will recommend this test if you have had an accident recently or suffered neck pain. This examination can help diagnose the possibility of injury to your spine accurately. This test is also called a CT scan of the neck.

When should I have a CT scan of the neck?

CT produces more detailed and faster body images. This test can help to check:

  • cervical spine birth defects in children
  • spinal problems, when MRI of the spine cannot be used
  • injury to the upper spine
  • bone tumor and cancer
  • fracture
  • disc herniation and compression of the spinal cord

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing a CT scan of the neck?

Sometimes the results of CT tests can differ from other types of X-ray tests, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or ultrasound scans, because CT scans provide a different appearance. Children who need a CT scan will need special instructions. If the child is still too small to be quiet and not move much or is afraid, the doctor will give the drug (sedative) to help him calm down. If your child is scheduled for a CT scan, talk to your pediatrician about the need for a scan, and the risk of exposure to radiation from your child.

MRI can provide more information from CT scans about spinal discs and spinal cord. When a CT scan of the spine is done with a myelogram, it is called a CT myelogram. MRI of the spine is often done after myelogram CT.

Process

What should I do before undergoing a CT scan of the neck?

If the examination involves using contrast dyes, you need to make certain preparations first. Be sure to tell your doctor if you have allergies or if you have diabetes. In rare cases, some people have an allergic reaction to coloring. This can also cause a negative reaction if you use certain drugs to treat diabetes. You should not eat or drink for four to six hours before the scan time if you use contrast dye.

It is highly recommended not to do a CT scan during pregnancy unless the benefits are greater than the risks obtained. If you are pregnant, you need permission from your doctor before conducting this examination. You will be asked to remove metal objects such as jewelry, piercings, glasses, hearing aids, or removable dental equipment. This can affect the results of your CT scan. Some machines have heavy limits; so be sure to tell your doctor if you weigh more than 150 kg.

What is the process of CT scan neck?

You will lie on a small table that can move into the middle of a CT scan tool. Once you are on a scan, an X-ray machine revolves around you. (Modern "spiral" scanners can carry out checks without stopping). A computer creates images that are separate from the body area, called slices. These images can be saved, viewed on a monitor, or printed on a film. The three-dimensional model of the cervical spine can be created by combining slices together.

You have to keep quiet, not moving much during the examination. Movement can cause blurry images. You may need to hold your breath for a short period of time. The scan takes 10-15 minutes.

What should I do after undergoing a CT scan of the neck?

After this test, you can replace your clothes and carry out your activities. If you need a contrast dye for examination, you may need to drink plenty of water. This can help remove chemicals from your body. The results of the CT scan will be available within 48 hours. Your doctor will review the image and determine the next process. Depending on your results, your doctor can request additional scans, blood tests, or other diagnostic measures to help get an accurate diagnosis.

If you have questions relating to the process of this test, consult your doctor for a better understanding.

Explanation of Test Results

What do the test results mean?
