Definition

What is urethrotomy?

A urethrotomy is a medical procedure to treat the narrowing of the urethra (the bladder canal which carries urine and semen to the tip of your penis). Ordinary narrowing is caused by scar tissue that is formed due to irritation, infection, or injury. This can cause the urge to urinate more often, the sudden desire to urinate, the rate of urine slows down, and the feeling of still urinating.

When do I need to undergo uretrotomy?

You need a urethrotomy procedure to facilitate the flow of urine and increase emptying of the bladder, and reduce the desire to urinate more often at night. You will be more resistant to infection after receiving this procedure.

Prevention & warning

What should I know before undergoing uretrotomy?

Dealing with narrowing of the urethra using balloon dilatation and a dilator (a metal bar placed in the urethra) is fairly possible. Balloon dilatation is a method by pumping a balloon in your urethra. Some of the more complex constriction will sometimes require surgical surgery using plastic surgery techniques. Narrowing can occur again.

Process

What should I do before undergoing uretrotomy?

Discuss with your doctor about your latest treatment, your allergies, or your health condition. Before carrying out the operation, you will meet with the anesthetist and discuss the sedative methods that will be used. It is important to always follow the doctor's instructions about when you should start fasting before surgery.

You will be given clear guidelines for pre-surgery, including whether you can eat any food / drink before the procedure. Generally, you will be required to fast 6 hours before the operation begins.

What is the urethrotomy process?

The urethrotomy procedure is performed under conditions of general anesthesia or administration of anesthesia only to the area of the spine. The duration of the procedure is usually less than 30 minutes.

The surgeon will insert a stethoscope (cytoscope) into your urethra to check for narrowing.

Then, the doctor will slice the scar tissue to widen the path of your urethra.

After the procedure, you can:

  • go home immediately after carrying out the operation, or stay overnight in the hospital
  • back to work after a few days of recovery
  • do light exercise to help you get back to your daily activities. Before exercising, ask for advice from a doctor or a team of medical staff who handle you.

Complications

What complications can occur?

The urethrotomy is a safe procedure. However, there are several risks of minor complications that may occur. Consult your surgeon about the risks you might get.

Complications from a number of medical procedures generally include reactions to unexpected anesthesia, bleeding or blood clots (deep vein thrombosis DVT). Other more specific complications, namely:

  • difficulty urinating
  • the penis swells
  • narrowing of other parts of the urethra

You can reduce the risk of complications with caution and always follow your doctor's rules regarding preparation for receiving endoscopy, such as fasting and stopping certain medications.
