Medical Video: Calculate Heat of Reaction

1. Definition

What is a hot reaction?

There are three main reactions to extreme heat environments. All three reactions are caused by the loss of large amounts of water from the body through sweat. It usually occurs in those who exercise during hot weather. Babies usually have a greater risk because they are not ready to release heat pressure through sweat. For treatment, choose the type of heat reaction that is suitable for your child. For this condition, measurement of rectal body temperature can be more reliable than by mouth.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Heatstroke or Sunstroke

Hot skin and redness; high fever (at least up to 40 ° C); difficulty sweating, confusion, unconsciousness, and shock (low blood pressure). Attacks usually increase gradually.

Exhaustion Heat (Fatigue due to Heat)

The skin feels cold and pale; not accompanied by fever (temperature less than 37 ° C); excessive sweating; and experience dizziness, fainting, or fatigue. Attacks are usually gradual.

Heat Cramp

Serious cramps in the limbs (especially in the calves and thigh muscles) and in the abdomen, accompanied by fever.

2. How to overcome them

What should I do?

First aid for heat stroke or shock and weakness due to the heat of the sun:

  • Call an ambulance immediately.
  • Heat attacks can endanger lives. High fever is a serious emergency.
  • Cool the patient's body as quickly as possible. Move it to the shade. Remove your clothes (except for underwear) so that the body surface can release heat. Place the ice block on the armpit and around the groin. Wipe the patient's body with cold water (as cold as can be tolerated), and kipasi. If the patient is unconscious, soaking in cold water can help his life. (Note: acetaminophen and ibuprofen will not help).
  • If the patient is unconscious, give as much cold water to drink, as cold as he can tolerate.

First aid for heat exhaustion or heat because of heat:

  • Contact a doctor immediately.
  • Place the patient in the shade. Lay with your feet raised.
  • Compress with a damp cloth or a cold towel.
  • Give as much cold water to drink until the condition improves.
  • After 2 or 3 cups of water, take it to the hospital. Provide a large amount of water in the car.

Home care for heat cramp or hot cramps:

Hot cramps are a general reaction to excessive heat. This condition is not a serious condition. Give patients as much cold water to drink, as cold as they can tolerate until their condition improves. No need to take it to a doctor.

When do I have to see a doctor?

Patients must be taken to hospital immediately if they show symptoms heat stroke.

3. Prevention

When your child plays or sports in a hot environment, make sure they drink a large amount of cold water. Water is the ideal solution to replace lost water through sweat. Very little salt is lost. Special glucose electrolyte solutions do not benefit more than water, unless you exercise longer than an hour.

To prevent a heat attack, also do the following steps:

  • Make sure your child rests to drink every exercise for 25 minutes.
  • Teens must drink as much as 8 ounces (240ml) every 30 minutes. Encourage your child to drink even if he doesn't feel thirsty. Thirst is usually delayed until a person is almost dehydrated.
  • Avoid using salt tablets because the tablets slowly empty the stomach and absorb the liquid.
  • Make sure your child uses one-layer clothing or thin clothes. Change clothes if you are already wet with sweat.
  • The trainer recommends that exercise sessions be reduced if the temperature exceeds 30 ° C, especially if the humidity level is high enough.
  • When using a hot tub, limit use to 15 minutes and make sure there are other people near you to anticipate if a sudden heat reaction occurs. Hot tubs and saunas should be avoided by people with fever or people who have just finished exercising when the body needs to release heat.
  • Protect a fevered baby from a heat attack by not wrapping it in a blanket or thick clothes.
