Medical Video: 6 Popular Hair MYTHS That Are NOT True... That YOU Believe!
Who has never experienced hair loss? Although hair loss is a normal thing experienced by everyone including women and men, hair loss is the most avoided thing. Sometimes, you may even notice if you experience hair loss when you see hair clumps on the floor of your room or bathroom; then you panic because you worry that your hair will thin out due to the loss.
It is not surprising that many people, maybe including you, find out the causes of this loss from various sources, including the internet. Unfortunately, not all information obtained is true. Therefore, here are some myths and facts about hair loss that you need to know.
Myth 1: Baldness is inherited by the mother
Of course, baldness is not only inherited by the mother; because when you are born, from every part of your body there will be three possibilities, namely genetics that are only inherited by the father, genetic that is only inherited from the mother, or genetic inherited by the mixing of father and mother. Including baldness.
Myth 2: All stress causes hair loss
It's no wonder that many people think that stress is the cause of hair loss. This is not entirely wrong. But all you have to remember is, short-term stress (such as you are late to work, traffic jams, many tasks, etc.) will not make your hair fall out; because stress that can make hair loss is more severe stress than that, namely long-term stress. Stress in question is that can make your sleep disturbed and even reduced appetite including stress after giving birth.
Myth 3: Hair loss can definitely be prevented
For most men, hair loss is caused by miniaturization. Miniaturization is a word used to describe the progressive thinning of hair. This process usually occurs when the hair follicles are triggered to grow over a shorter period of time so that the hair becomes very weak and small.
Unfortunately, in men, hair loss cannot be prevented because what can be done when hair loss starts to appear, which may be a sign of baldness, is that you have to take medication or even surgery. Usually with treatment, some men can restore their hair for five years.
Myth 4: High testosterone levels are a cause of baldness
Excess testosterone does not cause baldness (for both women and men). However, the excess testosterone will be converted by the body into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and in this process will cause damage to the hair follicles. Therefore, if you consult a doctor and find out that the cause of hair loss is due to excess testosterone, the doctor may prescribe an anti-androgen drug to block the effect of the hormone on the hair follicles to prevent damage to the hair follicles.
Myth 5: Hair loss is permanent
Hair loss is only temporary. For example, many women lose some hair after giving birth because their hormones are still in the process of being adjusted to return to pre-pregnancy levels. Or, there are also many women who experience hair loss because they have dietary problems that result in iron and zinc deficiency (both are essential nutrients for strong hair). All causes of hair loss can certainly be treated to prevent more severe hair loss.
Myth 6: Only older women will experience hair loss
Unfortunately, hair loss can even occur in adolescence. Usually, hair loss is caused by hormonal problems. This condition is commonly called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and can also cause irregular menstruation, excess weight, facial hair growth, and increased acne.
Myth 7: Frequent shampooing will make your hair fall out
This is a myth that is often heard. In fact, until now there is not enough scientific evidence that says that shampooing too often can make hair fall out. In fact, shampooing will clean the oil on your scalp which can contain hormones that can trigger hair loss. So if you rarely do shampoo, it will be bad for your hair; like dandruff will appear on your hair which can inhibit hair growth. Therefore, make sure to shampoo regularly at least every other day.
